- Description
- In contrast to dutifully killing the enemy, a soldier is not supposed to rape a woman, at least in theory. But rapes occur in war. They always have, and often in settings and upon a scale that is difficult to comprehend. Accordingly, rape in times of war has a direct effect upon the society where the conflict takes place. More specifically, it affects women, and this violence against them can have the added, profoundly negative effect of eroding their particular social and environmental conditions. As difficult and emotional this issue may be, though, rape in war is in direct correlation to the study of women, their health and development. In locales where war has raged or is raging still, sexual violence against women is an individual and collective wound like no other.

- Description
- This paper explores the trend of sexual violence against women that emerged in Pakistan with the introduction of the Islamization process through the implementation of the Sharia laws since 1979. The focal pont is rape and the state legislation that governs it, namely the Zina Hudood Ordinance and the Law of Evidence, and how the gender-discriminatory nature of these laws serves as a powerful weapon in the hands of the patriarchal society of Pakistan to suppress women. These laws and their rigid interpretation in the name of Islam have not only furthered oppression and sexual violence against women to an alarming degree in Pakistan, but also seriously destroyed women's chances of equal justice. The factors that led to the implementation and survival of such laws in the first place, and consequently how rape became a intimidating weapon against women, are discussed. The paper examines the various political, social, cultural and religous factors that contribute to this situation, and the legal and social complexities involved for women in seeking justice in rape cases. In conclusion Pakistani women's initiative in evolving and building an organized resistance and struggle for the cancellation of gender discriminatory laws are discussed.

- Description
- Poverty is a risk factor for intimate partner violence (IPV): however, little is known about the economic state at which women are no longer at risk for IPV due to their economic status, which is economic solvency. A Model of Economic Solvency in women has been developed from the literature that includes four factors: human capital, social capital, sustainable employment, and independence. The purpose of this research is to validate the model in a sample of women reporting IPV. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed to test the model using data from 280 abused women. Examination of the model yielded adequate fit with the data, indicating that the model is valid for use with women reporting IPV. The validation of the model offers strength of association between constructs and can be used to plan interventions to improve economic solvency in abused women to potentially reduce violence and facilitate recovery.

- The goal of this study is to determine whether the public awareness campaigns carried out in Spain to promote sensitivity to violence against women are effective. To achieve this goal, the author analyzed the evolution of Spanish society’s perception of the problem of violence against women from 1985 to the present, relative to the Spanish government’s expenditure on sensitization campaigns on violence against women. The joint analysis of expenses and results will enable us to reach conclusions about the relationship between these two variables.
