A social and cultural history of the 1960s and 1970s in the United States in which women arrived in rock and roll, as performers, critics, and fans. While operating in different ways within rock culture, female musicians, journalists, and groupies rewrote women's roles on and off the stage. Influential musicians between 1965 and 1975 were Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Laura Nyo, Joni Mitchell, Tina Turner, Grace Slick, Cass Elliot, Carole King, Carly Simon, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Patti Smith, Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, Karen Carpenter, Cher, and Diana Ross. It also contains Baron Wolman's photo gallery of rock women from the 1960s.
