- Description
- Collection of articles about the history of Victorian fashion in Britain of the nineteenth century. This book brings together sources that trace the evolution of dress and the social, cultural and political discourses that influenced Victorian fashion. Each section presents a sample of writings and images connected to one of the seven themes: fashion theory, dress reform, crinolines and corsets, men's dress, occasional dress, production and industry and international influences. It combines primary texts by authors such as Oscar Wilde and Sarah Stickney Ellis and illustrations with explanatory notes to offer an overview of the period for both students and researchers. Also analysed are interdisciplinary fields including gender studies and literature. .

- Description
- This publication highlights how, from the 16th to the 19th centuries, European women, as readers and writers, contributed to the construction of national identities. The book, which presents twenty countries, is divided into four parts. First, it examines how women belonged to nations: they represented territories and political or religious communities in their own style. Second, it deals with the ways in which women wrote the nation: the network of relationships in which they were involved that were not necessarily national or territorial. The legitimation that women writers succeeded in finding is emphasised in the third section, while in the fourth is analysed how and why women were open to the outside world, beyond the country's borders.

- Description
- Prodigiously learned, alive to the massive social changes of her time, defiant of many Victorian orthodoxies, George Eliot is at once chronicler and analyst, novelist of nostalgia and monumental thinker. In her novel Middlemarch she writes of 'that tempting range of relevancies called the universe'. This volume identifies a range of 'relevancies' that form the various contexts - of her time, and of our own - pertinent to understanding and in the fullest sense appreciating George Eliot. The dimensions of her achievement are illuminated by essays on particular facets of the many contexts - historical, intellectual, political, social, cultural - that inform her work.

Her seminal novel, The Awakening, published in 1899, explored new and startling territory, and stunned readers with its frank depiction of the limits of marriage and motherhood. The essays in this Companion treat a wide range of Chopin's stories and novels, drawing her relationship with other writers, genres and literary developments, and pay close attention to the transatlantic dimension of her work.

- Description
- This book is an exploration of the European artistic and intellectual networks in which the work of the American writer Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) was first developed and circulated. Along the way, the book investigates the European contexts of Stein's writing, how her own work intersected with European thought, including phenomenology and the work of Henri Bergson, and ultimately how it was received by scholars and artists across the continent.

- Description
- The essays in this volume discuss the work of Simone de Beauvoir and Lucy Irigaray, to find out which thoughts the two philosophers share. The first section explores the place of the material in Beauvoir's thought and reads Beauvoir in a framework that goes beyond a theory of gender and the humanism of phenomenology. The second section focuses on points of dialogue between the two philosophers in logic, ethics and politics.
