- Description
- Analysis by regions, countries and types of migration reveals a strong variation regarding levels and features of female and male migration. This approach shows the distinct ways in which gender roles, perceptions and relations, each embedded in a particular cultural, geographical, and socioeconomic context, affect migration dynamics. This volume demonstrates that gender matters at each stage of the migration process.

- Description
- This book re-evaluates and extends understandings about how work was conceived and what it could entail for women in the premodern period in Europe from c. 1100 to c. 1800. It does this by building on the growth in literature on women’s working experiences, and by adopting new interpretive approaches that expand received assumptions about what constituted 'work' for women.

- Description
- This volume traces the different ways in which Javanese migrants and migrant communities are connected in their host society and with Java as a real or imagined authoritative source of norms, values and loyalties. The labour element dominates the Indonesian overseas experience. The book also shows how ethnicity, class, gender, religion and hierarchy have shaped the dynamics of diasporic communities. The chapters pay particular attention to gender as, since the 1960s, women for the first time have formed the majority of international migrants, domestic work being the largest category of transnational work.

- Description
- Drawing from scholarship on gender history, economic sociology, family history, civil law and feminist economics, these essays explore the changing and often contested boundaries between what was and is considered work in different Euro-American contexts over several centuries, with an eye to the ambiguities and biases that have shaped mainstream conceptions of work across all social sectors.

- Description
- This book adopts a focus on migrants employed in sectors of the economy that are regarded as marginal or precarious ( domestic work and care work in private homes and institutional settings, cleaning work in hospitals, call centre labour, informal trade ) with the goal of understanding the aspirations and mobilities of migrants and their families across generations in relation to questions of gender and labour.
