- Description
- In this book the author takes a gendered approach to labor conflicts, anticolonial struggles, and citizenship in modern Lebanon. The author looks at the conditions and experiences of women workers at the French Tobacco industry. Looking at culturally inscribed roles for Middle Eastern women, the book highlights traditions of public activism and militancy among rural women that are in turn adapted to the spaces of the factory. Women employed distinct strategies involving kinship, sectarian, gender, and class ties to enhance their work conditions and social benefits. The author argues that the condition of women can only be explained by exploring the shifting relationship between culture, societal arrangements, and economic settings.

- Description
- The dissertation explores the colonial roots of the symbols and representations which surround migrant domestic workers in Europe. The author asks how colonial legacies affected the experience and identity formation of the first postcolonial female migrants, prior to 1980, arriving in the former colonizing country and working there as domestic and care workers. The study is based on interviews with Afro-Surinamese women in the Netherlands and with Eritrean women in Italy. With a Dutch and English summary.

- Description
- This book confronts the historic devaluation of lesbian-feminist politics within Anglo-American discourse and ignites a transnational and transgenerational discussion regarding the relevance of lesbian feminisms in today’s world. The writers consider the wider place of lesbian feminisms within queer theory, post-colonial feminism and the movement for LGBT rights. They consider how lesbian feminisms can contribute to discussions on intersectionality, engage with trans activism and the need for trans-inclusion, to ultimately show how lesbian feminisms can offer a transformative approach to today’s sexual and gender politics.

- Description
- Growing up in Kenya, Kenda Mutongi encountered a perplexing contradiction. While the young teachers at her village school railed against colonialism, many of her elders, including her widowed mother, praised their former British masters. In this book Mutongi explores how both the challenges and contradictions of colonial rule and the frustrations and failures of independence shaped the lives of Maragoli widows and their complex relations with each other, their families, and the larger community. Throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, rates of widowhood have been remarkably high in Kenya. Mutongi here argues that widows survive by publicly airing their social, economic, and political problems, their “worries of the heart.” Initially aimed at the men in their community, and then their colonial rulers, this strategy changed after independence as widows increasingly invoked the language of citizenship to demand their rights from the new leaders of Kenya —leaders whose failure to meet the needs of ordinary citizens has led to deep disenchantment and altered Kenyans’ view of their colonial past.

- Description
- This essay collection is dedicated to intersections between gender theories and theories of laughter, humour, and comedy. It includes a series of investigations on traditional and modern media in western cultures from the 18th to the 20th century. A theoretical opening part is followed by four thematic sections that explore the multiple forms of irritating stereotypical gender perceptions: aspects of (post-)colonialism and multiculturalism: the comic impact of literary and media genres in different national cultures: as well as the different comic strategies in fictional, philosophical, artistic or real life communication. The volume presents a variety of new approaches to the overlaps between gender and laughter.

- Description
- Women Writing Greece explores images of modern Greece by women who experienced the country as travellers, writers, and scholars, or who journeyed there through the imagination. The essays assembled here consider women's travel narratives, memoirs and novels, ranging from the eighteenth to the late twentieth century. This collection aims to cast new light on women's participation in the discourses of Hellenism and Orientalism, examining their ideological rendering of Greece as at once a luminous land and a site crossed by contradictory cultural memories. The essays discuss encounters with Greece by, among others, Lady Elizabeth Craven, Lady Hester Stanhope, Lady Montagu, Mary Shelley, Virginia Woolf, Ethel Smyth, Christa Wolf and Gillian Bouras, and analyse them through a variety of critical, historical, contextual and theoretical frames.
