- Description
- In this book , contributors from South and North emphasize that in order to end economic poverty and social inequality between the sexes, a profound change is needed in our attitudes to women's work and relationship with money. A way of empowering women economically has been to target income-generating projects and credit schemes at women. The essays in this book give examples that show that the relations between money, power, and status are complex. Access to income does not always lead to increased control of assets within the household. What is the impact of microfinance on gender relations, and how can we ensure that microfinance programmes fulfill their promises? What is the impact of new technologies on stereotypes of women's skills and status within the workplace. Examples from situations in Indonesia, Cameroon, South Asia, the Caribbean, and migrant workers in Europe. With an article on the Dutch feminist organization 'Mama Cash', that provides financial and moral support to women's groups and entrepreneurs.
