- Description
- The mainstream reproductive rights movement, largely dominated by white women and consumed with protecting the right to abortion, has failed to respond adequately to the policing, criminalization, and incarceration of large numbers of poor people and people of color. This book places issues of race, class, and gender at the center of its reproductive rights and social justice agenda by focusing on a key concern among women of color and poor communities today: the difficulty of maintaining families and sustaining community in the face of increasing criminalization. .Women of color have articulated a broad reproductive rights agenda embedded in issues of equality and social justice. They have challenged coercive population policies, demanded access to safe and accessible birth control and asserted their right to economic and political resources to maintain healthy children. .This book discusses the policing of bodies by examining the experiences of women prisoners, women with AIDS in correctional facilities, women in systems of prostitution, immigrant women and women of color.

- Polly Adler's 'house' was a brothel, a major site of New York City underworld activity from the 1920s through the 1940s. Adler's notorious Lexington Avenue house of prostitution functioned as a sort of social club for New York's gangsters and a variety of other celebrities, including Robert Benchley and his friend Dorothy Parker. A self-consciously literary work, A House Is Not a Home provides an informal social history of immigrant mobility, prostitution, Jewish life in New York, police dishonesty, the 'white slavery' scare of the early twentieth century, and political corruption. Adler's story fills an important gap in the history of immigrant life, urban experience, and organized crime in New York City. While most other accounts of the New York underworld focus on the lives of men, from Herbert Asbury's Gangs of New York through more recent works on Jewish and Italian gangsters, this book brings women's lives and problems to the forefront

- Special issue that features contributions that engage with both the past and the future: both historicizing the deep linkages between gender and state violence and imagining e a different future—one that is free from not only police violence, but also from broader structures of harm that are rooted in a framework of criminalization. A particular strength of this issue is its explicit focus on the multiple—often overlooked—sites of violence perpetrated against Black women and women of color, including, for instance, the child welfare system and the medical industrial complex. Drawing our attention to the ways these systems are deeply interwoven and rooted in the same gender ideology that posits women of color and gender non conforming people as problems to be dealt with, contributions in this issue take as their sites of intervention spaces including medical examination rooms and case managers’ offices.

- Description
- This book explores representations of women to the construction of knowledge in a global world as migrant subjects. The essays focus on the female body as a site of physical violence and abuse, fighting prevalent stereotypes about women s representations and identities. Women s strategies for building possible identities are seen to be based on their own experiences, seeking the ways in which the public marking and marketing of the female body within the western male imaginary contributes to the making of women s social and personal identities. The articles in this book examine issues of gender and boundaries, the realities of women as colonial and postcolonial subjects, discrimination as a result of migration, racism, and colonization analysed through a variety of critical perspectives. The gendered, raced, classed dimensions and mixed heritages not only of white women but also of women of the African Diaspora: these are important issues for the construction of knowledge and identity in our present multicultural societies,

- Description
- This book is about the harms and crimes to which women are subjected as a result of global social processes and their efforts to take control of their own futures. The chapters explore the criminogenic and damaging consequences of the policies of the global financial institutions as well as the effects of growing economic polarisation both in pockets of the developed world and most markedly in the global south. Another theme addresses human rights from the standpoint of indigenous women, minority women and those seeking refuge. Women in the poorest countries are sceptical as to the efficacy of rights claims in the face of the depredations of international and global capital, and the social dislocation produced thereby. In the end there is no solution without politics, and in both the opening and the closing sections of this book there are chapters which address this. What continues to be special about women's political practice is the connection between the groundedness of small groups and the fluidity and flexibility of regional and international networks: the effective politics of the global age.

- Description
- This book narrates the development of the new companionate marriage ideal, which took hold in the early twentieth century and prevailed in American society by the 1940s. The first challenges to discuss sexual relations between husbands and wives came from social hygiene reformers, who advocated for a sex education to combat prostitution and venereal disease. A more radical group of feminists, anarchists, and bohemians opposed the Victorian model of marriage and even the institution of marriage. Birth control advocates such as Emma Goldman and Margaret Sanger openly championed women's rights to acquire and use effective contraception. The 'companionate marriage' emerged from these efforts. This marital ideal was characterized by greater emotional and sexuality intimacy for both men and women, use of birth control to create smaller families, and destigmatization of divorce in cases of failed unions. Simmons examines what she calls the 'flapper' marriage, in which free-spirited young wives enjoyed the early years of marriage, postponing children and domesticity. She looks at the feminist marriage in which women imagined greater equality between the sexes in domestic and paid work and sex. And she explores the African American 'partnership marriage,' which often included wives' employment and drew more heavily on the involvement of the community and extended family.

- Description
- This book reveals that historic sites and buildings have much to tell us about women's history. It documents women's contributions to the historic preservation movement at places such as Mount Vernon and explores women's history at several existing landmarks such as musea and historic homes, as wells as in a wider array of cultural landscapes ranging from nurses' residences to prostitutes' quarters. The book includes essays on six exemplary projects that have advanced the integration of women's history into historic preservation and closes with three perspectives on preservation policy and practice. .National in scope but applicable in any locality, this book combines the most important recently published information with new research and covers many national, state, and local initiatives of the past decade This book can serve as a travelguide past women's history sites in the United States.
