- Description
- Feminist theory on motherhood has successfully transformed mothers into subjects of their own discourse, recognized the historical, heterogeneous and socially constructed origins of their life experience while, at the same time, widening our understanding of the notion of mothering. This collection combines a literary and a wider cultural perspective from which to look at the topic of the representation of other or forgotten motherhoods. Mothers who have been forced to live exiled and away from their children, women who after trying to conceive, get pregnant but discover they cannot bear to become mothers, or even literary characters based on an autobiographical experience of a sexually abusive mother.

- Description
- Storied Selves focuses on feminist Witches and their constructions of identities through the use of opposition and speculation as technologies of identity, particularly (post)colonial, maternal, and holistic identities. Through these identity formations, feminist Witches are invested in changing consciousness to create a just and sustainable world - an act that is fundamental to their practices of magic. The analysis draws from the two major North American traditions of feminist Witchcraft: Dianic and Reclaiming. Novels analyzed in the book are: Barbara Walker's Amazon, Cynthia Lamb's Bridid's Charge, and Starhawk's 'The fifth sacred thing'.

- Description
- Palko undertakes a comparative transnational reading to develop literary models of good mothering. She argues that Irish and Caribbean literary representations of non-normative mothering practices do not reflect dangerous mothering but are rather cultural negotiations of the definition of a good mother. This book demonstrates the commitment to countering the dominant ideologies of maternal self-sacrifice foundational to both Irish and Caribbean nationalist rhetoric, offering instead the possibility of integrating maternal agency into an effective model of female citizenship.

- Examining Morrison's novels, essays, speeches, and interviews, the author illustrates Morrison builds upon black women's experiences of and perspectives on motherhood to develop a view of black motherhood that is radically different than the motherhood practiced and prescribed in the dominant culture. Motherhood, in Morrison's view, is fundamentally and profoundly an act of resistance, essential and integral to black women's fight against racism (and sexism) and their ability to achieve well-being for themselves and their culture.

- This collection explores the complex ways motherhood is experienced by studying the concrete and imaginary spaces mothers inhabit. The authors examine locations for birth, negotiations of domesticity, institutional framings of the mother's world, and maternal metaphors in art and popular culture. Using conceptions of space as a common lens, these essays articulate the interplay between motherhood as a cultural construction and motherhood as a lived experience.

- Description

- Improvements in education and economic expansion in the 1950s ensured a range of school-leaving employment opportunities. Yet girls' full acceptance as adult women was still confirmed by marriage and motherhood rather than employment. This book examines the gendered nature of 'career'. Using both written sources and oral history, it enters the theoretical debate over the significance of gender by considering the relationship between individual women and the dominant representation of 'Woman'.

- This analysis of cyberpunk science fiction written between 1981 and 2003 positions women's cyberpunk in the larger cultural discussion of feminist issues. It traces the origins of the genre, reviews the critical reactions and outlines the ways in which women's cyberpunk advances points of view that are specifically feminist. Novels are examined within their cultural contexts: their content is compared to broader controversies within contemporary feminism, and their themes are revealed as reflections of feminist discourse around the turn of the 21st century.
