- Description
- This book explores the aesthetic and political roles performed by Jewish characters in women's fiction between the World Wars. Focusing mainly on British modernism, it argues that female authors enlist a multifaceted vision of Jewishness to help them shape fictions that are thematically daring and formally experimental. Maren Linett analyzes the meanings and motifs that Virginia Woolf, Jean Rhys, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Dorothy Richardson, and Djuna Barnes associate with Jewishness. The writers' simultaneous identification with and distancing from Jews produced complex portrayals in which Jews serve at times as models for the authors' art, and at times as foils against which their writing is defined.

- Description
Sarah Bracke's artikel is gebaseerd op haar proefschrift Women resisting secularisation in an age of globalisation (2004).

- Analysis of the construction of women in the aggadic midrash, a collection of expansions of the biblical text, rabbinic ruminations and homiletical discourses that constitutes the non-legal component of rabbinic literature. Examining rabbinic convictions of female alterity, competing narratives of creation and justifications of female disadvantages, as well as aggadic understandings of the ideal wife, the issue of infertility, and women among women and as individuals, she argues that rabbinic Judaism, a tradition formed by men for a male community, deeply valued the essential contributions of wives and mothers while also consciously constructing women as other and lesser than men.

- Description
- Studying American Jewish feminism from the 1960s and '70s, Jewish feminists examines how second-wave feminist activists retrospectively construct their identities as Jews and how these constructions have changed throughout their lives. The author argues that these Jewish feminists experience a sense of ambivalence as both feminists and Jews as they ask how being Jewish makes them different from other feminists. Drawing from interviews with more than 24 second-wave feminist Jews, of which five are men, the author describes how these identities sometimes coincide or contrast.

- Jewish women have changed America. The leadership of Jewish women in American social movements, particularly in the second wave of feminist movement, is striking. After more than four decades, leaders of the second wave, like many of the panelists at the conference on which this issue is based continue to make change as they have throughout their now illustrious careers. In Part 1 Temple University Professor Laura Levitt leads a discussion on Jewish women and the American mainstream with: Katya Gibel Azoulay, author of 'Black, Jewish & Interracial: It's Not the Color of Your Skin but the Race of Your Kin, and Other Myths of Identity': Liz Holtzman, former congresswoman from Brooklyn: Lisa Jervis, editor, Bitch magazine: Letty Cottin Pogrebin, cofounder, Ms. magazine and the National Women's Political Caucus: and Nancy Schwartzman, filmmaker 'Between Us' and creative director Heeb magazine. Moses Professor of Modern Jewish History at Yale University, moderated this discussion with panelists: Shifra Bronznick, founding president, Advancing Women Professionals and the Jewish Community: Sally Gottesman, chair, Moving Traditions: Khadijah Miller, assistant professor of interdisciplinary studies, Norfolk University: Gina Nahai, author, Cry of the Peacock and Moonlight on the Avenue of Faith. In Part 3 a conversation with Rabbi Sue Levi Elwell, regional director, PA Council, Union for Reform Judaism: Judith Hauptman, E. Billi Ivry Professor of Talmud and Rabbinics, Jewish Theological Seminary: Norma Joseph, associate professor of religion, Concordia University: Lori Lefkovitz, director of Kolot: The Center for Jewish Women's and Gender Studies: Danya Ruttenberg, author, Yentl's Revenge: Third Wave Jewish Feminism and moderated by Judith Plaskow, professor of religious studies at Manhattan College. The third panel of the Ingeborg, Tamara & Yonina Rennert Women in Judaism Forum, 'Changing Judaism,' addressed how feminists have sought to reshape Jewish theology and religious practice. In Part 4 'Changing culture' Naomi Scheman, professor of philosophy at the University of Minnesota, led this discussion with: Rebbetzin Hadassah Gross, international lecturer and motivational speaker: Rachel Havrelock, assistant professor of Jewish studies, University of Illinois at Chicago: Faith Jones, Bridges magazine: Irena Klepfisz, poet, translator and adjunct associate professor of women's studies, Barnard College: Alisa Solomon, director of the arts concentration, Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. - Description
- Tova Hartman created a new modern Orthodox synagogue in Jerusalem, that is more inclusive to women. In this book she explores contact points between comtemporary feminist thought and aspects of Jewish tradition. She discusses three feminist analyses of Freudian psychology for reading Jewish texts: modesty and the religious male gaze: the backlash against feminism by traditional rabbis: the male imagery in liturgy: and Orthodox women and purity rituals. Throughout, she emphasizes the importance of reinterpretation, asking her readers to view as 'creative tensions'what seem like obvious and insurmountable contradictions between traditional and modern beliefs.

- The authors argue that a struggle for women’s rights is possible within non-secular contexts. The articles explore the lives of orthodox religious women and reflect on the relationship between fundamentalism and feminism in religious contexts. Strategies and discourses of women and women’s organisations on how to relate to religious fundamentalism is discussed, such as the emerging movement of ‘Islamic feminism’ that strives for ‘gender justice’ within Islamic contexts, and the struggle of women in Latin America who plead for women’s rights while at the same time retaining their Catholic faith and beliefs. This book was also published as issue 27 (October 2006) of the Journal for Humanistics.

- Description
- This book addresses the veiled role of Jewishness in the understanding of feminist (visual) art in the United States. Lisa Bloom situates the art practices of Jewish feminist artists from the 1970s to the present, from New York City to southern California, in relation to wider cultural and historical issues behind the reticence on the topic of Jewish identities in the visual arts. The artists studied in this book include Eleanor Antin, Judy Chicago, Deborah Kass, Rhonda Lieberman, and Martha Rosler, amongst many others.

- Description
- A widely recognized and respected authority on French literature, women's writing, feminist theory, and Jewish studies, Elaine Marks wrote groundbreaking books on Collette, Simone de Beauvoir, and Jewish themes in French literature. This book continues her legacy of rigorous intellectual exploration, enlivening scholarship in diverse areas of thought. The eleven essays in the collection bring together a number of intellectual, political, and ethical domains that were central to Marks's work: pedagogy, feminism, lesbianism, women's auto/biography, Jewish identity, community, memory, mourning, isolation, and death. In their interpretations of works by Marks, Simone de Beauvoir, Hélène Cixous, Philip Roth, Jacques Derrida, Roland Barthes, Marcel Proust, and others, the authors illustrate and engage Marks's existential vision, fearlessly probing the human experience to make sense of how we live, die, and understand both.
