- Description
- The contributors to this book examine women and the construction of gender thematically, dealing with the areas of politics, law, religion, sexuality, literature and economics, and in a variety of social categories, from Christians and Moriscas, queens and merchants, peasants and visionaries, heretics and madwomen. The essays cover different regions in the Spanish monarchy, including Andalusia, Aragon, Castile, Catalonia, Valencia and Spanish America, from the fifteenth century through to the eighteenth century. The book focuses on two central themes: gender relations in the shaping of family and community life, and women's authority in spheres of power. The representation of women in a variety of texts such as poetry, court cases, or even account books illustrate the multifaceted world in which women lived, constantly choosing and negotiating their identities.

- This book moves beyond the traditional understanding of the four elements of hip-hop culture—rapping, breakdancing, graffiti art, and deejaying—to articulate how hip-hop feminist scholarship can inform educational practices and spark, transform, encourage, and sustain local and global youth community activism efforts. This multi-genre and interdisciplinary reader engages performance, poetry, document analysis, playwriting, polemics, cultural critique, and autobiography to radically reimagine the political utility of hip-hop-informed social justice efforts that insist on an accountable analysis of identity and culture. Featuring scholarship from professors and graduate and undergraduate students actively involved in the work they profess, this book's commitment to making the practice of hip-hop feminist activism practical in our everyday

- This collection of articles illuminates the ways in which the concept of female deviance is represented, re-inscribed and refigured in a wide range of texts across time, cultures and genres. The choice of variety shows that representations of deviance accommodate meaning-making spaces and possibilities for resistance in different socio-cultural and literary contexts. The construct of the deviant woman is analysed from literary, sociolinguistic and historical-cultural perspectives, revealing insights about cultures and societies. Furthermore, the studies recognise and explain the significance of the concept of deviance in relation to gender that bespeaks a contemporary cultural concern about narratives of femininity.

- This volume analyzes representations of the mother in francophone post-2000 literature and films in North America. Contributors reexamine the 'horrible mother' paradigm to broaden the understanding of mothering beyond traditional ideology (e.g. the working multitasking mother, the absent mother and the liberated mother). The chapters focus on the predominant theme of the mother in order to reassess questions of for example identity, guilt, heteronormativity and childlesness. They refer to works of writers or filmmakers such as Nelly Arcan, Grégoire Chabot, Marguerite Andersen and Xavier Dolan.

- Description
- The essays examine women in early modern Spain who defended their right to make their own decisions, defined their own identities, battled the status quo, challenged authority, and broke barriers. Such women did not necessarily engage in masculine pursuits, but often used cultural production and engaged in social subversion to exercise resistance in the home, in the convent, as actors and producers in the theater, women as dramatic subjects in plays on stage, and as writers, poets and readers. One part of the book is about Teresa of Ávila (1515-1582).
Each author makes a short nod to Bárbara Mujica, whose career this book celebrates, and her contribution to the field of Spanish literature, theater, women's studies, Teresian studies, and historical fiction.

- Description
- This collection of essays explores the cultural meanings of women leaving home. The volume aims to put the narrative element of home-leaving into a European context by investigating travel in various directions: from England to somewhere abroad, from the (former) colonies to the (former) imperial centre or simply within a psychic space. The female figures discussed in the volume leave home for various reasons - to go into exile, to challenge orthodox conceptions of femininity, to travel for pleasure or out of curiosit. The essays in this collection focus on how the cross-cultural encounters implicated in discourses of race, gender, nation and religion affect female identity. The 'protagonists' of these narratives range from mythical heroines to early modern Protestant refugees to fictitious and historical figures from the past 200 years. like Saartjie Baartman. The discussion throughout is informed by contemporary theories of gender, literary and cultural studies.

- The Womanist Reader anthologizes the major works of womanist scholarship. Charting the course of womanist theory from its genesis as Alice Walker's African-American feminism, through Chikwenye Okonjo Ogunyemi's African womanism and Clenora Hudson-Weems' Africana womanism, to its present-day expression as a global, anti-oppressionist perspective rooted in the praxis of everyday women of color, this interdisciplinary reader traces the rich and diverse history of a quarter century of womanist thought. The book featurs selections from over a dozen disciplines by top womanist scholars from around the world, plus several critiques of womanism. It also contains an extensive bibliography of womanist sources.

- This volume explores issues of black female identity through the various “imaginings” of the black female body in print and visual culture. Offering an exploration of the continuities and discontinuities of subjectivity and agency, this collection reveals black women’s expressivity as a multilayered enterprise, liberating and similarly confining. Thus these representations in art, literature, and culture perform a delicate and challenging dance of redemption—a redemption necessary to flesh out the precarious dynamics of being black and female at the turn of this century.

- Description
- Women Writing Greece explores images of modern Greece by women who experienced the country as travellers, writers, and scholars, or who journeyed there through the imagination. The essays assembled here consider women's travel narratives, memoirs and novels, ranging from the eighteenth to the late twentieth century. This collection aims to cast new light on women's participation in the discourses of Hellenism and Orientalism, examining their ideological rendering of Greece as at once a luminous land and a site crossed by contradictory cultural memories. The essays discuss encounters with Greece by, among others, Lady Elizabeth Craven, Lady Hester Stanhope, Lady Montagu, Mary Shelley, Virginia Woolf, Ethel Smyth, Christa Wolf and Gillian Bouras, and analyse them through a variety of critical, historical, contextual and theoretical frames.

- This volume sets out to investigate queer literature and cinema, exploring in particular the intersection of issues of gender and Lusophone culture. The essays collected here present individual case studies within a queer theoretical framework, examining the ways in which queer identities are constructed and addressed through different types of cultural production. More specifically, they consider Portuguese and Lusophone socio-cultural contexts and the representation of gender in popular culture, as well as the centrality of literature and cinema in the subversion of heteronormative social norms.

- Description
- Liber amicorum for Carolyn P. Collette, American professor emerita of English language and literature and a specialist in medieval literature, as she retires from Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley MA, United States. The essays gathered in this volume present considerations of the intersection of objects and gender within the cultural contexts of late medieval France and England. Some take a material view of objects, showing buildings, books, and pictures as sites of gender negotiations and extensions of women's bodies. Other reconsider the concept of objectification in the lives of fictional and historical medieval women by looking closely at their relation to gendered material objects, taken literally as women's possessions and as figurative manifestations of their desires. Contents:
Part 1: Objects and gender in a material world: The 'Thyng Wommen loven moost' : the wife of Bath's fabliau answer ['The wife of Bath's tale', 'Canterbury tales', Geoffrey Chaucer] : Zenobia's objects : The object of miraculous song in 'The prioress's tale'.
Part 2: Buildings, books, and women's (self-)fashioning: A gift from the queen : the architecture of the Collège de Navarre in Paris [the first royal college in Paris] : Anne of Bohemia and the objects of Ricardian kingship : Royal biography as reliquary : Christine de Pizan's 'Livre des fais et bonnes meurs du sage roy Charles V' : A gift, a mirror, a memorial : the psalter-hours of Mary de Bohun : 'Parchment and pure flesh' : Elizabeth de Vere, Countess of the twelfth Earl of Oxford, and her book.
Part 3: Bodies, objects, and objects in the shape of bodies: Objects of the law : the cases of Dorigen and Virginia : Galatea's pulse : objects, ethics, and Jean de Meun's conclusion : Transgender and the chess queen in Chaucer's 'Book of the duchess' : Statues, bodies, and souls : St. Cecilia and some medieval attitudes toward ancient Rome.
