- This book explores the relationship between home, household headship and enterprise in Victorian London. It examines the notions of duty, honour and suitability in how women’s ventures are represented by themselves and others and engages in a comparison of the interpretation of historical female entrepreneurship by contemporaries and historians in the UK, Europe and America. Drawing on contextual evidence from 1747 to 1880, including fire insurance records, directories, trade cards, newspapers, memoirs, the census and record linkage, this study concentrates on the early to mid-Victorian period when ideals about gender roles and appropriate work for women were vigorously debated.

An organizing framework connects the works from theory to the conceptual categories of human capital, including personal cognition and goals, social capital, financial capital, strategic choice, performance, outcomes and environment.

- Description
- Equal opportunity in the workplace is thought to be the direct legacy of the civil rights and feminist movements and the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964. Frank Dobbin demonstrates the central role that employers themselves have played in the evolution of the understanding of equal opportunity and discrimination in America. .He traces how the first measures were adopted by military contractors worried that the Kennedy administration would cancel their contracts if they didn't take 'affirmative action'. These measures built on existing personnel programs, many designed to prevent bias against unionists. Dobbin follows the changes in the law as personnel experts invented one wave after another of equal opportunity programs. He examines how corporate personnel formalized hiring and promotion practices in the 1970s to eradicate bias by managers: how in the 1980s they answered Ronald Reagan's threat to end affirmative action by recasting their efforts as diversity-management programs: and how the growing presence of women in the newly named human resources profession has contributed to a focus on sexual harassment and work/life issues.

It offers a systematic and conceptual framework for understanding issues of network structures and human and financial capital, analyzed through a comparative analysis of minority and white women entrepreneurs. .The book begins by looking at the historical and current contributions of women in the labor market, as well as literature related to women entrepreneurs. Subsequent chapters take a critical and in-depth look at white and minority entrepreneurs. Later chapters examine the status of women entrepreneurs in the national sphere in the US, followed by various analyses of their position in the global marketplace. The book concludes with a set of action tools to aid women entrepreneurs as they navigate the road to economic success.

- Description
- This book identifies the general processes through which gender as a principle of inequality rewrites itself into new forms of social and economic organization. Ridgeway argues that people confront uncertain circumstances with gender beliefs that are more traditional than those circumstances. They implicitly draw on the too-convenient cultural frame of gender to help organize new ways of doing things, thereby re-inscribing trailing gender stereotypes into the new activities, procedures, and forms of organization. This dynamic does not make equality unattainable, but suggests a constant struggle with uneven results.

- More women are running major companies than ever before. While still far too few in number, these female heads of industry are the forerunners of a radical shift in power now underway. During the past few years, women's groups have been coalescing in every major American city. Formidable ladies across professions are convening at unprecedented rates, forming salons, dinner groups, and networking circles, and collaborating to achieve clout and success. A new women's network is alive and set to hyperdrive. This book is about those groups: the 'Power Bitches' and 'Brazen Hussies' It's about what happens when women, from captains of industry to aspiring entrepreneurs, come together to debate and compare notes. But it's also about what happens when they leave the table, when the talking stops and the action starts. It's about how they mine their collective intelligence to realize their dreams, how they lift up their friends and push them forward.

Moving from corporate headquarters to factory floors, her study traces the diverse ties that link First and Third World workers and managers, producers and consumers. Collins examines how the transnational economics of the apparel industry allow firms to relocate or subcontract their work anywhere in the world, making it much harder for garment workers in the United States or any other country to demand fair pay and humane working conditions. .Putting a human face on globalization, Threads shows not only how international trade affects local communities but also how workers can organize in this new environment to more effectively demand better treatment from their distant corporate employers.

- Description
- The story of one group of pioneers in the American labor movement - the thousends of women who left New England farm towns to work in the textile cities that sprang up in the region in the early nineteenth century. Their goal was to achieve personal independence, their mission social justice. At a time when women had no political influence, they battled powerful mill owners for fair pay and decent working conditions. The book fills the American stage with historical figures - from the blue-blooded Cabots and Lowells of Boston to the Southern slaves who first supplied cotton to the mills.
