- Description
- Carlson compares the dynasty of the writers Wollstonecraft, Godwin and Shelley to a family. Their works and lives influence each other. The book includes chapters on the writers' efforts to rewrite the sentiments and literary conventions associated with family life, their sentiments and opinions on life and death, their embrace of fancy, the texts they wrote on and for children. The political theories and novels of Wollstonecraft and Godwin are considered to reform love to make it more conductive to the autonomy of women and men. With an epilogue 'On Percy's case'.

Whether published in encoded desire or squirreled away in intimate archives, these “passion projects” recorded life then in order to summon an audience now, and stand as important predecessors of queer and feminist recovery projects that have shaped the contemporary understanding of modernism.

- Description
- This book explores how the publication of women's life writing influenced the reputation of its writers and of the genre itself during the nineteenth century. It provides case studies of Frances Burney, Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Robinson and Mary Hays, four writers whose names were caught up in debates about the moral and literary respectability of publishing the 'private' through diaries, lettes, memoirs and (auto)biography. Focusing on gender, genre and authorship, this study examines key works of life writing by and about these women, the reception of these texts in essays, reviews, fiction, poetry and other life writing, qualitative and quantitative data like prints runs, circulation figures, pricing and reprinting patterns. The book examines: Diary and letters of Madame D'Arblay (1842-1846) / Frances Burney : Letters written during a short residence in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark (1796) / Mary Wollstonecraft : Memoirs of the author of a Vindication of the rights of woman (1798) / William Godwin : Memoirs (1801) / Mary Robinson : Female biography (1803) / Mary Hay : (Coda:) Common Reader / Viriginia Woolf (1925, 1932).

- Description
- This book tells the stories of five novelists ( Mary Shelley, Emily Bronte, George Eliot, Olive Schreiner, Virginia Woolf ) and their famous novels. In linking their creativity to their lives as outsiders, this group biography throws new light on the genius they share. 'Outsider', 'outlaw', 'outcast': a woman's reputation was her security and each of these five lost it. As writers, they made these identities their own, taking advantage of their separation from the dominant order to write their novels.

- In 'Mariage à la mode' Kathie Roiphe studies a certain type of progressive marriage, occurring in literary circles in England, in the period from roughly 1910 to the beginning of the second World War. She is interested in different aspects of the marriages, one of which is the difference between the ideas on love and marriage, and real life. Roiphe thought it remarkable that, in spite of the most progressive, forward-thinking intentions of the couples in the book, it is astonishing what a stubborn hold the most archaic ideas of marriage had on their imaginations. The couples portrait are: H.G. and Jane Wells: Katherine Mansfield & John Middleton Murry: Elizabeth von Arnim & John Francis Russel: Vanessa & Clive Bell: Ottoline & Philip Morrell: Radclyffe Hall & Una Troubridge: Vera Brittain & George Gordon Catlin.
