- Description
- In this anniversary edition to celebrate the 35th jubilee of LOVA the focus is on etnographies of gender and the body. Irma Beusink presented a paper at he LOVA conference in Amsterdam, July 2014, using metaphors to analyze differences within feminisms and their translations into the governmental policies and political statements of indigenous women's organizations in Bolivia. Breast cancer is the second most frequent cancer in the world and a mastectomy is the main method of treatment. Mastectomized women must reconstruct the way that they express their femininity and the symbols that identify them. In El Salvador significant changes in social life have occurred due to the levels of violence that the maras, or transnational street gangs, have generated. How adolescent women living in mara-controlled territories associate themselves with the maras and how their associations impact their sexuality and life strategy choices are discussed by Edith Yesenia Pena Sánches en Mónica Paola Zúniga Escobar. Authors describe the corporeality of an ethnographic view of morbid obesity, technoscience and identity by analyzing the story of a woman with morbid obesity in Mexico City. Anorexia nervosa as a health problem shows a prevalence of 0.5 to 5% in Mexico and it is mainly shown in adolescent and young adult women. In his paper Matthew W Maycock shows certain forms of competition and the denial of pain, both of which are integral to being rickshaw drivers, in light of their implications for masculine bodies and performances. The last 10 years has seen an increase in traditional bride abduction (ukuthwala) cases in South Africa. Recent cases share the common element of sexual violence of under-aged girls by much older men, or even groups of men. Diana Dubrovska takes a look at female sex tourism in the Caribbean and Latin America. In her paper Heather Tucker considers the contemporary Euro-American and European interests and outrage over the 'barbarity' of anti-homosexuality legislation in countries in Africa. Ourania Tsiakalou pays attention to the massive detentions of trans women that took place in Greece as well as some other instances of transphobia, as it was presented in the media and in the public sphere.

- Description
- This book chronicles the dawn of the global movement for women's rights in the first decades of the twentieth century. Marino introduces readers to Latin American and Caribbean women who forged global feminism out of an era of imperialism, racism, and fascism. Six activists form the heart of this story: from Brazil, Bertha Lutz: from Cuba, Ofelia Domingez Navarro: from Uruguay, Paulina Luisi: from Panama, Clara Gonzalez: from Chile, Marta Vergara: and from the United States, Doris Stevens. This Pan-American network drove a transnational movement that advocated women's suffrage, equal pay for equal work, maternity rights, and broader self-determination.

- Description
- In this special issue on feminism in Latin America and the Caribbean an article on lesbian feminism in reply to the two 'Marcha de lesbianas feministas' held in 2003 and in 2004 in Mexico City. Sueli Carneiro writes about 'blackening feminsm', taking racism as a system of oppression with an impact on gender relations in all societies, and integrating the consequences of this position within feminist praxis and theory. Shown also are some elements of Afro-descendant women's political practices that precede theoretical feminism as it emerged in the West. Indigenous women call for a fight on several fronts, like racism, sexism and lesbianism, and at the same time demand political action characterized by the search for alliances beyond divisions of race and class. Different lines of autonomous feminism in Latin America and the Caribbean are described.

- Description
- This volume provides a picture of the current state of feminist sociological gender and women's studies research in four regions of the world--Africa, Asia, Latin America/Caribbean, and Europe. The introductory essay to each region explains how social science research on women and/or gender issues has been shaped by economics, politics, and culture, and by trends that are simultaneously local, regional and global. Then each regional section includes up to chapters on gender research in specific countries that represent the region's diversity and cover the major trends that have emerged over time, as well as the relationship of key research questions to feminist activism and women’s or gender studies. The editors illustrate this new wave of gender scholarship with samples of research articles from additional countries in the region, that cover a wide range of topics, such as work, sexuality, masculinities, childcare and family issues, religion, violence, law and gender policies. Finally, this volume provides scholars with extensive bibliographies and a listing of web sites for women’s and gender research centers in 85 countries.

- Description
- This book is a study of global feminist activism that opposes neoliberal regimes across several sites including Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe, Latin America and the United States. The feminist performative acts featured in the book contest the aggressive unravelling of collectively won gains in gender, sexual and racial equality, the appearance of new planes of discrimination, and the social consequences of political economies based on free market ideology. The investigations of affect theory follow the circulation of intensities – of political impingements on bodies, subjective and symbolic violence, and the shock of dispossession – within and beyond individuals to the social and political sphere.

- Description
- This collection examines how women’s movements have responded to the political, economic, and social changes of the last twenty years. The essays focus on the various strategies women’s movements have adopted and assess their successes and failures. The book is organized around three broad topics. The first, women’s access to political power at the national level, is addressed by essays on the election of Michelle Bachelet in Chile, gender quotas in Argentina and Brazil, and the responses of the women’s movement to the “Bolivarian revolution” in Venezuela. The second topic, the use of legal strategies, is taken up in essays on women’s rights across the board in Argentina, violence against women in Brazil, and gender in the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Peru. Finally, the international impact of Latin American feminists is explored through an account of their participation in the World Social Forum, an assessment of a Chilean-led project carried out by women’s organizations in several countries to hold governments to the promises they made at international conferences in Cairo and Beijing, and an account of cross-border organizing to address femicides and domestic abuse in the Juárez-El Paso border region. Jane S. Jaquette provides the historical and political context of women’s movement activism in her introduction, and concludes the volume by engaging contemporary debates about feminism, civil society, and democracy.

- Description
- This research has its roots in de evidence that was produced in the eighties on the detrimental impact of irrigation projects on gender equality. Why it is that irrigation development negatively affects gender equality? Out of an explicit feminist commitment, the linkages between gender (in-equality and irrigation development are explored from two different angles. The first angle consists of a critical discussion of current theories that underlie irrigation planning and policies. In many ways, these theories make it difficult to properly recognize and accommodate gender relations. At the same time they are based on an incomplete and often inadequate understanding of these relations. The second angle consists of a number of case studies undertaken in different countries (Nepal, Sri Lanka, Niger, Burkina Faso) to empirically explore how and where gender relations affect and are affected by irrigation management policies and practices.

- The book examines feminist testimonios from a wide range of countries, including Argentina, Egypt, Haiti, India, Jamaica, and Trinidad as well as the United States. The author suggests that feminist testimonios offer a model for cross-border feminist alliance building. The book focuses on the questions of translation, knowledge and power that characterize the creation and reception of these life writings. DeRocher demonstrates how these stories can mobilize social activism and intervene in epistemological impasses between the Global North and South, offering tools for reimagining transnational feminist politics.

- This book analyses the challenges feminists face as they seek to engage with new spaces of participatory democracy in Latin America. Phillips and Cole analyse how new silences, exclusions and re-inscriptions of inequalities have emerged alongside these new spaces of participation. The book re-examines the relationship between public and private and speaks to a larger theoretical question: what is the meaning of 'the public' within democracy projects? The book considers current debates among feminists from different generations on the merits of a variety of strategies, goals and issues.

- Description
- The essays in this book challenge the knowledge about the fairy-tale heroine and offer new insights into the tales produced by female writers and storytellers. Exploring new texts and contexts, Fairy Tales and Feminism reaches out beyond the national and cultural boundaries that have limited our understanding of the fairy tale. Also considered within this volume is how film, television, advertising, and the Internet test the fairy tale's boundaries and its traditional authority in defining gender. .From the Middle Ages to the postmodern age—from the French fabliau to Hollywood's Ever After and television's Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?—the essays assembled here cover a broad range of topics that map new territory for fairy-tale studies.
