- Description
- With this study Claudia Thorun has made a contribution in an innovative area of research. Her interdisciplinary approach offers insights and directions for theatre studies, for culturally oriented gender studies, and for the historiography of the theatre. Sarah Bernhardt - praised as the ‘queen of the theatre’, feared as the ‘sacred monster’, decried as a ‘publicity seeker’ - was an actress celebrated throughout the world and one of the first international stars. In the late 19th century the French actress embodied contemporary images of femininity such as the New Woman, the virtuous courtesan and the man-eating femme fatale. Sarah Bernhardt’s image as a star and the discourse about her as a star formed the basis for discussion of important social developments of the fin de siècle, in particular the cracks and changes in perceptions of gender.
