- Description
- In this book, Brooks argues that from the mid-nineteenth century tot the early twentieth, black transatlantic activists, actors, singers, and other entertainers frequently transformed the alienating conditions of social and political marginalization into modes of self-actualization through performance. Brooks considers the work of African American, Anglo, and racially ambiguous performers in a range of popular entertainment, including racial melodrama, spectacular theatre, moving panorama exhibitions, Pan-Africanist musicals, Victorian magic show, religious and secular song, spiritualism, and dance. She describes how these entertainers experimented with different ways of presenting their bodies in public, through dress, movement, and theatrical technologies, to defamiliarize the spectacle of 'blackness' in the transatlantic imaginary.

- Description
- Cannibal Fictions brings together two periods in U.S. history: the years between the Civil War and World War I and the post-Vietnam era, when the nation was beginning to seriously question its own global agenda. Berglund shows how P. T. Barnum, in a traveling exhibit featuring so-called 'Fiji cannibals,' served up an alien 'other' for popular consumption, while Edgar Rice Burroughs in his Tarzan of the Apes series tapped into similar anxieties about the eruption of foreign elements into a homogeneous culture. Turning to the last decades of the twentieth century, Berglund considers how treatments of cannibalism variously perpetuated or subverted racist, sexist, and homophobic ideologies rooted in earlier times. Fannie Flagg's novel Fried Green Tomatoes invokes cannibalism to new effect, offering an explicit critique of racial, gender, and sexual politics (an element to a large extent suppressed in the movie adaptation). Recurring motifs in writing by contemporary American Indian authors Gerald Vizenor, Anna Lee Walters, Leslie Marmon Silko, and Sherman Alexie suggest how Western expansion has, cannibalistically, laid the seeds of its own destruction.

- Description
- Beginning with the pin-up's origins in mid-nineteenth-century 'carte-de-visite' photographs of burlesque performers, Buszek explores how female sex symbols, including Adah Isaacs Menken and Lydia Thompson, fought to exert control over their own images. Buszek analyzes the evolution of the pin-up through the advent of the New Woman, the suffrage movement, fanzine photographs of early film stars, the Varga Girl illustrations that appeared in Esquire during World War II, the early years of Playboy magazine, and the recent revival of the genre in appropriations by third-wave feminist artists.

- Description
- Sophie Tucker appeared in seven American stage musicals and appeared only twice on Broadway but it was difficult to cast her in a show. A ebullient performer, she quickly found that playing herself was most effective. .This is a biography of a vaudeville and cabaret performer who saw herself as one of the first liberated women and one of the last 'red hot mamas.' It tells the story of her birth as her mother traveled to Boston from Russia, her childhood in Boston, and her first public performance at Poli’s Vaudeville Theatre at the age of 13. It also tells the story of her troubled marriage to Louis Tuck and the birth of their son, her meeting with Willie Howard, a vaudeville veteran who encouraged her to go to New York and pursue a stage career, her discovery by Flo Ziegfeld (of the Ziegfeld Follies), and her rise to headliner status under the guidance of her agent William Morris. She was best known for appearing on stage with just a piano player, and openly discussing her life and Jewish upbringing.
