- Collection of essays on gender, race, and nation. The opening essays are theoretical. They deal with the central concept of networking, a gendered definition of modernism in the global context and a definition of postcolonial cosmopolitanism. Other essays are on the lives and works of modernist Carribbean writers and Pan-Africanist women activists. Una Marson, Amy Ashwood Garvey, Catherine Carswell, Nancy Cunard, Zora Neale Hurston, Dorothy West and Albinia Catherine Mackay are among the women discussed.

- Description
- Women held more positions of power in the silent film era than at any other time in American motion picture history. As an example actrice Gene Gauntier wrote the first script of Ben-Hur and Helen Holmes choreographed her own on-camera stunt work. Yet these and other filmmaking women vanished from memory. Using individual careers as a point of departure, the book describes how women first fell out of the limelight and then out of the film history itself. The author examines how 1970s feminist historiography failed to rediscover them and sees a need for a theory of these artists' pasts that relates their aspirations to those of contemporary women.

Three cities serve as case studies: New York City, with its political machine and ethnic policies: Grand Rapids, with ethnic and racial diversity: and Birmingham where access to the ballot was sharply restricted, especially by race. It also illuminates the ways in which women and men, black and white, and in various regions of the country, pursued places for themselves in the public sphere.
