- Description
- This book is a study of convent theatre in Italy, an all-female tradition. Widespread in the early modern period, but virtually forgotten today, this activity produced a number of women dramatists and works of unusual merit. Convent authors, actresses and audiences, especially in Tuscan houses, the plays written and produced, and what these reveal about the lives of convent women are the focus of this book.

- Description
- Through an examination of the role of nuns and the place of convents in both the spiritual and social landscape, this book analyzes the interaction of gender, religion and society in late medieval and early modern Spain. Author Elizabeth Lehfeldt here examines the tension between religious reform, which demanded that all nuns observe strict enclosure, and the traditional identity of Spanish nuns and their institutions, in which they were spiritually and temporally powerful women. Lehfeldt's work is based on the archival records of twenty-three convents in the city of Valladolid, and peninsula-wide documents that include visitation records, the constitutions of religious orders, and spiritual biographies.

- Description
- Many early modern writers left accounts of their spiritual sufferings and convictions which deal in extremes of emotion and behavior--some identified by their contemporaries as mad, to be treated with medication, counseling, and confinement. Their writings give us a window into the hidden world of early modern madness from the point of view of the mad. How is madness experienced and treated, and how can it be recorded? How do religion, gender, and class inflect the processes of diagnosis and treatment? And what insights can the stories these writers tell give us into early modern culture?

- Description
- The volume contains two theoretical sections supplemented by case-studies of gender through specific practices such as mysticism, witchcraft, crime, and legal behaviour. The first section, ‘Historiography and the politics of gender’, analyzes certain notions, such as patriarchy and morality. The second section, ‘Female spirituality, relogion, and gender identities’, seeks to deepen this analysis into the studies of female identities in various situations, cultures and dimensions and to show the fluidity and flexibility of what is called femininity nowadays. The third part, ‘Gendered witches and Nordic patriarchal compromises’, seeks to rethink the bigger narratives through the case-studies coming from Northern Europe to see how conventional ideas of gender did not work in this particular region.

- Description
- This volume explores the tensions between shared gender identity and the myriad social differences structuring women's lives. By examining historical experiences of early modern women, the authors of these essays consider the possibilities for commonalities and the forces dividing women. They analyse individual and collective identities of early modern women, tracing the web of power relations emerging from women's social interactions and contemporary understandings of femininity. Essays range from the late medieval period to the eighteenth century, study women in England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Sweden, and locate women in a variety of social environments, from household, neighbourhood and parish, to city, court and nation.
