- Description
- Galactic suburbia is a cultural history of postwar women's science fiction, a genre used in the United Stated after 1945 by nearly 300 women writers. The book can be used as a reference resource for studying the science-fiction writers or as a source of information on the formation of literary genres, women's work, domesticity, and scientific endeavors. The book includes case studies of well known writers such as Judith Merril, Carol Emshwiller, and Anne McCaffrey, and of lesser known authors such as Alice Eleanor Jones, Mildred Clingerman, and Doris Pitkin Buck. Yaszek challenges conventional literaty histories that posit men as the progenitors of modern science fiction and women as followers who turned to the genre only after the advent of the women's liberation movement.

- Shaw argues that Shelly not only gave birth to a literary genre by writing Frankenstei, but als established a paradigm for understanding the enduring fascination of science fiction for twentieth-century women writers, who, generally excluded from the debates that structure the role of new tecyhnologies and scientific theories in sociale life, have found a voice through engaging with the potential of this male-dominated genre. She focuses on the works of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Katharine Burdekin, C.L. Moore and Margaret St Clair.

- Description of Le Guin’s (1929) engagement with gender theory and practice. During the 1970s, Le Guin experienced a paradigm shift to feminism, a change which had effects on her work. This examination explores her early writing and how her work changed both thematically and aesthetically as a result of feminism. Attention is paid to Le Guin’s later phase, wherein she transitions to post-feminism.

- Description
- Since World War II, the biological and technological have been fusing and merging in new ways, resulting in the loss of a clear distinction between the two. As this process permeates more of everyday life, the urgent necessity arises to rethink both biology and technology. The human body can no longer be regarded either as a bounded entity or as a naturally given and distinct part of an unquestioned whole. This book assumes a posthuman definition of the body. It is grounded in questions about today's biocultures, which pertain neither to humanist bodily integrity nor to the anthropological assumption that human bodies are the only ones that matter. In exploring current reconfigurations of bodies and embodied subjects, the contributors pursue a technophilic path while articulating new and thoroughly appraised ethical standards.

- Description
- This book examines recent American and western European history when the utopian dimension of political movements was generative and feminism was at their core. The imaginative literature that emerged out of American, French, and German feminisms of the 1970s engaged the dialectic between the actual and the possible in radically new ways. Ranging from conventional utopian and science fictions to avant-garde and experimental texts, they countered the idea of utopia as a process of «dreaming forwards.» .This book explores the potential of feminist visions of change. It does more than look back to the 1970s. It looks ahead, anticipating some of the shifts and changes of feminist thought in the following decades: its transnational scope, its critique of identity politics and the gendered politics of sexuality, and its embrace of affect as an analytical category.

- Description
- This analysis of cyberpunk science fiction written between 1981 and 2003 positions women's cyberpunk in the larger cultural discussion of feminist issues. It traces the origins of the genre, reviews the critical reactions and outlines the ways in which women's cyberpunk advances points of view that are specifically feminist. Novels are examined within their cultural contexts: their content is compared to broader controversies within contemporary feminism, and their themes are revealed as reflections of feminist discourse around the turn of the 21st century.
