- In 1941, the Jewish American writer and avant-garde icon Gertrude Stein embarked on one of the strangest intellectual projects of her life: translating for an American audience the speeches of Marshal Philippe Pétain, head of state for the collaborationist Vichy government. Stein translated speeches in which he outlined the Vichy policy barring Jews and other 'foreign elements' from the public sphere while calling for France to reconcile with Nazi occupiers. This book pursues the question why and under what circumstances would Stein undertake this project? .Barbara Will outlines the formative powers of the relationship between Stein and Faÿ's political and aesthetic ideals, especially their reflection in Stein's writing from the late 1920s to the 1940s. Will treats their interaction as a case study of intellectual life during wartime France and an indication of America's place in the Vichy imagination. The book forces a reconsideration of modernism and fascism, asking what led so many within the avant-garde toward fascist and collaborationist thought.

- In 1941 Marie-Madeleine Fourcade became the leader of a vast intelligence organization—the only woman to serve as a chef de résistance during the war. Her group’s name was Alliance, but the Gestapo dubbed it Noah’s Ark because its agents used the names of animals as their aliases. The name Marie-Madeleine chose for herself was Hedgehog. .No other French spy network lasted as long or supplied as much crucial intelligence as Alliance. The Gestapo pursued them relentlessly, capturing, torturing, and executing hundreds of its three thousand agents, including Fourcade’s own lover and many of her key spies. Although Fourcade, the mother of two young children, moved her headquarters every few weeks, constantly changing her hair color, clothing, and identity, she was captured twice by the Nazis. Both times she managed to escape and continued to hold her network together even as it repeatedly threatened to crumble around her.

- Roberts tells the story of how the US military command systematically spread—and then exploited—the myth of French women as sexually experienced and available. The resulting chaos—ranging from flagrant public sex with prostitutes to outright rape and rampant venereal disease—horrified the war-weary and demoralized French population. The sexual predation, and the blithe response of the American military leadership, also caused serious friction between the two nations just as they were attempting to settle questions of long-term control over the liberated territories and the restoration of French sovereignty.

- Description
- Surrealist Masculinities offers an exploration of how surrealist visual production was shaped by constructions of gender and sexuality, particularly masculinity, in the 1920s and early 1930s. Amy Lyford builds on feminist critical approaches to surrealism, which have viewed the female body in surrealism as symptomatic of male misogyny: yet she also departs from such work by arguing that representations of an anxious, ambivalent, or perverse masculinity were integral to the movement's critique of France's 'return to order' in the years following World War I. This book analyzes surrealist work in relation to the history of surrealism and investigates how surrealist artists and writers appropriated contemporary medical science, advertising, and sexology in their quest to undermine the status quo.

- During the Second World War, various Nazi agencies competed for the plunder of occupied Europe’s archival heritage. This volume brings together reports by individuals who took part in the negotiations for the return of those twice-plundered archives, among those the archives of the IIAV. Patricia Kennedy Grimsted reveals her story of the seizure and dramatic fate of those records in Nazi and Soviet hands and the post-1991 political battle within Russia over their restitution. In the second half of the volume, the stories of individual countries are told, with the focus on the returned archives of France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, together with the Austrian Rothschild archives. Appendices present the legal instruments for the return of these of these ‘displaced’ twice-captured archives, and identify the present locations of all of those that have recently come home from Russia, some of them long believed lost. Military and security records, documents from early Masonic lodges for the memory of centuries past, new memorials to those who perished in the war and the Holocaust - all are covered in this book .

Drawing on historical and sociological arguments, it specifically looks at the experiences of men in France, Holland, Belgium, and Poland. It starts by examining the gendered environment and ideas of Jewish masculinity during the interwar period and in the run-up to the Holocaust. The volume then goes on to explore the effect of Nazi persecution on various elements of male gender identity, analysing a wide range of sources including diaries and journals written at the time, underground ghetto newspapers and numerous memoirs written in the intervening years by survivors.

- Description
- Can there be a flaneuse, and what form might she take? This is the central question of Streetwalking the Metropolis, a contribution to ongoing debates on the city and modernity in which Deborah Parsons re-draws the gendered map of urban modernism. Assessing the cultural and literary history of the concept of the flaneur, the urban observer/writer traditionally gendered as masculine, the author advances critical space for the discussion of a female 'flaneuse', focused around a range of women writers from the 1880s to World War Two. Cutting across period boundaries, this wide-ranging study offers stimulating accounts of works by writers including Amy Levy, Dorothy Richardson, Virginia Woolf, Rosamund Lehmann, Jean Rhys, Janet Flanner, Djuna Barnes, Anais Nin, Elizabeth Bowen and Doris Lessing, highlighting women's changing relationship with the social and psychic spaces of the city, and drawing attention to the ways in which the perceptions and experiences of the street are translated into the dynamics of literary texts.
