- Description
- This book re-evaluates and extends understandings about how work was conceived and what it could entail for women in the premodern period in Europe from c. 1100 to c. 1800. It does this by building on the growth in literature on women’s working experiences, and by adopting new interpretive approaches that expand received assumptions about what constituted 'work' for women.

- Description
- Examining the interactions of early modern male and female writers within the context of literary circles, Campbell investigates the ways the querelle des femmes as a discursive rhetorical tradition of praise and blame influenced women who participated in literary circles in Italy, France and England from 1530 to 1650. Campbell pairs selected female and male writers to analyze the way the woman writer responds, deflects or rewrites the male writer's ideological script about women. Her analysis of the confrontation between querelle issues and the new figure of the learned women contributes to a greater understanding of the connections between different national literatures of the period.

- Broomhall asks whether women's experiences as authors changed when manuscript circulation gave way to the printed book as a standard form of publication. She broadens the concept of publication to include methods of scribal publication, through the circulation and presentation of manuscripts, and expands notions of authorship to incorporate a wide sample group of female writers and publishing experiences. .The study introduces a wide and rich range of unexamined sources on early modern women, using an extensive range of manuscripts and the entire corpus of women's printed texts in sixteenth-century France. The work presents a checklist of all known women's writings in printed texts, from prefaces and laudatory verse to editions of prose and poetry, between 1488 and 1599. This book constitutes the most comprehensive assessment of women's contribution to contemporary publishing yet available.

- Anne of France (1461-1522), daughter of Louis XI and sister of Charles VIII, was one of the most powerful women of her time. As the fifteenth century drew to a close, Anne composed a series of enseignements, 'lessons', for her daughter Suzanne of Bourbon. These instructions represent a distillation of a lifetime's experience, and are presented through the portrait of an ideal princess to help her negotiate the difficult passage of a woman in the world of politics.

- Description
- This book presents a comparative history of major medieval and Renaissance European women writers in their relationship to national canons of literature. Challenging the notion of an oppressive patriarchy that discouraged women from writing and publishing, the fifteen essays collected here examine women's participation in fashionable male literary modes, trace their creation of female canons, and explore the history of their reception, from the fifteenth century to the present.

- Description
- When the French invaded Italy in 1494, they were shocked by the frank sexuality expressed in Italian cities. By 1600, the French were widely considered to be the most highly sexualized nation in Christendom. What caused this transformation? This book examines how, as Renaissance textual practices and new forms of knowledge rippled outward from Italy, the sexual landscape and French notions of masculinity, sexual agency, and procreation were fundamentally changed. Exploring the use of astrology, the infusion of Neoplatonism, the critique of Petrarchan love poetry, and the monarchy's sexual reputation, the book reveals that the French encountered conflicting ideas from abroad and from antiquity about the meanings and implications of sexual behavior.

- Description

- The essays in this collection explore new perspectives on the histories of bodies and sexualities, but also on issues that are allready the subject of major historiographical debates. The author emphasizes the historical distinctiveness of ideas about bodies, sex and desires and demonstrates the notable continuities that have existed over time. The essays draw attention to how ideas about sexuality, bodies and desires can be traced back through older knowledge and thinking.

- This book investigates the gendered nature of political culture across early modern Europe by exploring the relationship between gender, power, and political authority and influence. The collection offers a rethinking of what constituted ‘politics’ and a reconsideration of how men and women operated as part of political culture. It demonstrates how underlying structures could enable or constrain political action, and how political power and influence could be exercised through social and cultural practices. - Description
- This book examines the role of medicine in the debate on women, known as the querelle des femmes, in early modern France. Questions concerning women's physical makeup and its psychological and moral consequences played an integral role in the querelle. This debate on the status of women and their role in society began in the fifteenth century and continued through the sixteenth and well beyond. In querelle works early modern medicine, women's sexual difference, literary reception, and gendered language often merge. Literary authors perpetuated medical ideas such as the notion of allegedly fatal lovesickness, and physicians published works that included disquisitions on the moral nature of women. . .Judy Kem looks at the writings of Christine de Pizan, Jean Molinet, Symphorien Champier, Jean Lemaire de Belges, and Marguerite de Navarre, examining the role of received medical ideas in the querelle des femmes. Kem reconstructs how these authors interpreted the traditional courtly understanding of women's pity or mercy on a dying lover, their understanding of contemporary debates about women's supposed sexual insatiability and its biological effects on men's lives and fertility, and how erotomania or erotic melancholy was understood as a fatal illness. While the two women who frame this study defended women and based much of what they wrote on personal experience, the three men appealed to male authority and tradition in their writings.

- Description
- This study describes the ideas and works of women, mostly poets, who all had links to Marguerite d’Angoulême. Anne Malet de Graville was lady in waiting at the court of Claude de France, and made adaptations of two old texts. The Lyonnese school produced poets. Jeanne de Jussie, a Catholic nun, was driven out of Switzerland to a convent in Annecy, France, where she became abbess. She wrote a book wherein she described the horror of the persecution. Marie Dentière was a former abbess who abandoned her Catholic faith and wrote two books showing her as a strong defender of women. Camille de Morel belonged to an illustrious French family, and wrote poetry in Latin. This study provides biographies and studies of the surviving works of these women writers.
