- Description
- The Fourteenth Amendment, ratified on July 9, 1868, identified all legitimate voters as ‘male’. In so doing, it added gender-specific language to the U.S. Constitution for the first time. In this publication the author describes the pre- and postwar fights over precisely who should have the right to vote. She demonstrates that all men, black and white, were the ultimate victors of these fights, as gender became the single most important marker of voting rights during Reconstruction. In the final chapter the author considers how Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony reacted to the failure of their congressional petition campaign.

- Description
Oorspr. titel van the Liberation of women: Tahrir al-mar'a (1899). Oorspr. titel van The new woman: Al-Mar'a al-jadida 1900).

- Description
- This volume explores the interactions between gender and scientific research. It examines the ways scientists have researched gender throughout history, the influence of those results on society's perceptions of women, and the impact of those findings on the scientific community and on women, women scientists, and women's rights movements., The book is divided into two major sections, chronological and thematic. The articles in the chronological section highlight changes in time through historical eras and are international in scope. The format alternates between sociohistoric accounts and biographical essays listing and describing influential women in the field of science. The thematic section is divided into six subcategories and contains articles on the individual disciplines of science, aspects of human behavior, institutions, discrimination, and philosophical and theoretical critiques concerning women and science. Examples of articles in this section: the brain, mental illness, personality, hormones, menopause, homosexuality, race, nature/nurture, education, motherhood, religion, universities, professional societies, women scientists as leaders, and Nobel laureates. Other examples include: Feminist philosophy of science: Biologists who study gender/feminism: Historians of science who focus on feminism: Primatologists who focus on females/gender: Ecofeminism: Race, postcolonial gender, and science: Feminist science studies: Women's health movement: and Science fiction.

- Description

- Cultural views of femininity exerted a powerful influence on the courtroom arguments used to defend or condemn notable women on trial in nineteenth-century and early-twentieth-century America. The author analyzes the rhetorical strategies employed by lawyers and reporters in the trials of several women of varying historical stature, from the insanity trials of Mary Todd Lincoln and Lizzie Borden's trial for the brutal slaying of her father and stepmother, to lesser-known trials involving insanity, infidelity, murder, abortion, and interracial marriage.

- Description
- Ten first-generation Korean women who migrated to Japan during Korea's colonial period tell their compelling stories in Hidden Treasures. Powerful narratives of migration, minority life, gender discrimination, and the often-difficult social relations between Korean immigrants and the Japanese are included, written in the women's own words. The women in this volume participated in tumultuous times in the modern history of Korea and Japan, involving physical, psychological, geographic, and cultural displacements. These women transformed themselves in multiple ways: one from colonial subject to diasporic subject, another from a young and naive virgin bride to a self-made matriarch.
