- Description
- Special consideration in this volume is given to gender issues arising during periods when upheaval challenged colonial regimes, which often resulted in decolonization and independence. Chapters also reveal how former colonies transitioned into ‘nations,’ along with transnational dynamics that took place among modern states. A common thread woven through each article is the matter of precisely who it was that deserved to be treated and recognized as fully human in an era of imperial exchanges and ongoing capitalist globalization. Authors describe hemes as labour, commodities, fashion, mobility, and activism while exploring the dynamics of empire in destinations ranging from Africa and the Americas to Europe and Asia. .Originally published as Gender & History Volume 26 Issue 3

- Description
- Analysis by regions, countries and types of migration reveals a strong variation regarding levels and features of female and male migration. This approach shows the distinct ways in which gender roles, perceptions and relations, each embedded in a particular cultural, geographical, and socioeconomic context, affect migration dynamics. This volume demonstrates that gender matters at each stage of the migration process.

Religion is explored beyond the traditional boundaries of church worship and institutional structures to encompass the diverse cultures of male sexuality, home life, war, work, immigration, leisure and sectarian politics. Issues of change, such as the decline of single-sex associational settings, the theological shifts and changing fortunes of sects, the varying visibility of queer and homosexual cultures, and the shifting boundaries and collapsing distinctions between clergy and laypeople are explored in depth.

Her seminal novel, The Awakening, published in 1899, explored new and startling territory, and stunned readers with its frank depiction of the limits of marriage and motherhood. The essays in this Companion treat a wide range of Chopin's stories and novels, drawing her relationship with other writers, genres and literary developments, and pay close attention to the transatlantic dimension of her work.

- The cult of domesticity has often been linked to the privatization of religion and the idealization of the motherly ideal of the 'angel in the house.' This book revisits the Christian home of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and sheds light on the stereotypical distinction between the private and public spheres and their inhabitants. Emphasizing the importance of patriarchal domesticity during the period and the frequent blurring of boundaries between the Christian home and modern society, the case studies included in this volume call for a more nuanced understanding of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Christian ideas on family, religion, and the home.

- This book demonstrates how fiction and medicine have a tradition of looking towards each other for inspiration in questions of gender. Medical textbooks and pamphlets have cited fictional plots and characterisations as a way of communicating complex or 'sensitive' ideas. Essays explore historical accounts of clinical procedures, the relationship between gynaecology and psychology, and cultural conceptions of motherhood, fertility, and the female organisation through a broad range of texts including Henry More's Pre-Existency of the Soul (1659), Charlotte Brontë's Villette (1855), and Eve Ensler's Vagina Monologues (1998).

- In this collection of essays, contributors explore the construction of women as homemakers and the erasure of household labor from the middle-class home in popular representations of housework. They concentrate on such matters as the impact of second-wave feminism on families and gender relations: of popular culture—especially in film, television, magazines, and advertising—on our views of what constitutes home life and gender relations: and of changing views of sexuality and masculinity within the domestic sphere.

- Description
- This volume examines European perspectives on the historical relations that women have maintained with information and communication technologies (ICTs), since the telegraph. It describes how gendered networks have formed around ICT since the late 19th Century, it reviews the gendered issues revealed by the conflict between the actress Ms Sylviac and the French telephone administration in 1904, or by ‘feminine’ blogs, it examines how gender representations, age categories, and uses of ICT interact and are mutually formed in children’s magazines, it illuminates the participation of women in the early days of computing, through a case study on the Rothamsted Statistics Department, it presents a comparative study of women in computing in France, Finland and the UK, revealing similar gender divisions within the ICT professions of these countries, and it discusses diversity interventions and the part that history could (and should) play to ensure women do not take second place in specific occupational sectors.

- Description
- This book engages current scholarship on women in Texas, the South, and the United States. It provides insights into Texas’s geographic position, bordering on the West and sharing a history with Mexico, while analyzing the ways in which Texas stories mirror a larger American narrative. The biographies and essays illustrate a diversity among Texas women, reflecting experiences ranging from those of dispossessed enslaved women to wealthy patrons of the arts. That history also captures the ways in which women’s lives reflect both personal autonomy and opportunities to engage in the public sphere.

- This collection of essays gives an overview of key issues in Russian women's writing and of important representations of women by men, between 1600 and the present, exploring the differences between the writing of women and men in Russia. From the Primrose League (est.1883) to Women2Win (est.2005), the party has exploited women's political commitment and their social power from the grass-roots to the heights of the establishment. - Collection of essays on the life and work of activist and journalist Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862-1931). Known as an anti-lynching crusader, Ida B. Wells-Barnett worked throughout her life as a political advocate for the rights of women, minorities and members of the working class.

- Description
- Focusing on images of or produced by well-to-do nineteenth-century European women, this volume explores genteel femininity as resistant to easy codification to the public. The essays in the book demonstrate that definitions of both femininity and the public were mutually defining and constantly shifting. The essays also consider works in a range of media from fashion prints and paintings to private journals and architectural designs, facilitating an analysis of femininity in public across the cultural production of the period. Various European centers, including Madrid, Florence, Paris, Brittany, Berlin and London, emerge as crucial sites of production for genteel femininity, providing a long-overdue rethinking of modern femininity in the public sphere.

- Description

- This interdisciplinary collection considers the tensions that have developed between the historical privilege often ascribed to the male and the vulnerabilities to which his body is prone. Using historical and literary approaches, the essays consider the critical ways in which medicine's interactions with literature reveal vital clues about the ways sex, gender, and identity are constructed through treatments of a range of 'pathologies' including deformity, venereal disease, injury, nervousness, and sexual difference. The relationships between male medicine and ideals of potency and masculinity are explored through a range of sources including African American slave fictions, southern gothic, early modern poetry, Victorian literature, and the Modern novel.

- Description
- Selected collection of supernatural stories by British female writers from the second half of the nineteenth to the early twentieth century. Some of the authors included in this volume are Charlotte Perkins Gillman, Mary Wilkins Freeman, Olive Schreiner, Olivia Howard Dunbar and Mary Austin. Women at that time often wrote supernatural stories such as about spiritualism, cosmic horror and dark metaphors. They often introduced social commentary into their works, like the role of women and class struggles. Many women included in this book were involved in the suffragette or labor reform movement. As the work as a domestic was one of the few options for women from the lower classes, several stories were told from either the domestics in a wealthy household or the very poor viewpoint. Many of these women took up writing out of financial need and/or wrote under pseudonyms, using their married name or without any name.

- Since Malthus, an East–West dichotomy has been used to characterize marriage behavior in Asia and Europe. This book challenges this binary taxonomy of marriage patterns and family systems. Drawing on data, the authors compare the interpretations based on aggregate demographic patterns with studies of individual actions in local populations. The book studies local populations in Sweden, Belgium, Italy, Japan, and China.
