- Description
- The essays in this volume discuss narrative strategies employed by international writers when dealing with sexual violencein literature. In developing these feminist readings of rape narratives, the contributors aim to incorporate arguments about trauma and resistance in order to establish new dimensions of healing. The volume considers sexual violence from a number of different angles. Part one considers how the characters of the victim and rapist might be subverted in narratives of sexual violence. In the second part the essays explore how writers approach the subject of rape obliquely using metaphors to represent their suffering and pain. The controversy of not speaking about sexual violence is the focus of the next part, while the last part of the book considers the problems of making sexual violence visible in the poetic image, in film and on stage. The book covers a range of writers which includes like Toni Morrison, Sarah Kane, Sandra Cisneros, Nawal El Saadawi, Yvonne Vera, and Sharon Olds.

documenting incest and the Holocaust

- Description
- Trauma Cinema focuses on a new breed of documentary films and videos that adopt catastrophe as their subject matter and trauma as their aesthetic. Incorporating oral testimony, home-movie footage, and documentary reenactment, these documentaries express the havoc trauma wreaks on history and memory. Janet Walker uses incest and the Holocaust as a double thematic focus and fiction films as a point of comparison. Her astute and original examination considers the Hollywood classic Kings Row and the television movie Sybil in relation to vanguard nonfiction works, including Errol Morris's Mr. Death, Lynn Hershman's video diaries, and the chilling genealogy of incest, Just, Melvin. .Both incest and the Holocaust have also been featured in contemporary psychological literature on trauma and memory. The author employs theories of post traumatic stress disorder and histories of the so-called memory wars to illuminate the amnesias, fantasies, and mistakes in memory that must be taken into account, along with corroborated evidence, if we are to understand how personal and public historical meaning is made.

- Author seeks to explain the configuration of lesbian violence in the film, Monster, by taking as its starting point this updated cinematic rehearsal in terms that rearticulate a materialist feminist advance on the film's particular projection of queerness while engaging a critical theoretical qualification of right-residual tendencies within materialist theory that ideologically cull same-sex love and desire between and for women into a likewise potentially damaging mythification of revolutionary praxis. In this way, the article seeks not to reconnect the divergent psychoanalytic and materialist strands of critical theory.
