- Description
- This book presents an interdisciplinary approach to an aspect of Gothic texts, films, and music: that of rewriting. From the eighteenth-century Gothic novel to present-day vampire films and Goth music, the genre is characterised by its nostalgic reflection on past worlds, narratives, and identities. Gothic nostalgia is often accompanied by a transgressive drive, resulting in perversions of the rewritten past—the modern vampire is no longer embodied evil but an attractive dandy, while Goth subcultures reflect on Victorian aesthetics but pervert them by adding fetishist elements. This book brings together the early Gothic novel, present-day female and black Gothic literature, Goth subculture and music, and the imagery of horror films and comic books, thus broadening the definition of ‘Gothic’ from a literary genre to a gesture of pervasive cultural criticism.

- Gregory presents the history of stuntwomen in the film industry from the silent era to the twenty-first century. In the early years of motion pictures, women were highly involved in all aspects of film production, but they were marginalized as movies became popular and profitable. Capable stuntwomen were replaced by men in wigs and very few worked between the 1930s and 1960s. As late as the 1990s, men wore wigs and women's clothes to double as actresses, and were even 'painted down' for some performances, while men and women of color were regularly denied stunt work. For decades, stuntwomen have faced institutional discrimination, unequal pay, and sexual harassment even as they jumped from speeding trains and raced horse-drawn carriages away from burning buildings. Featuring sixty-five interviewsthis book showcases the stories of women who make their living planning.

- Description
- Collection of essays on cinematic motherhood. This publication explores this widespread cultural fascination with motherhood through analyses of mothers in contemporary U.S. film, including both mainstream and independent cinematic representations. The contributors draw on a variety of critical approaches to consider the spectacle of pregnancy, mother-daughter relationships, mothers as predators, narcissists, and absent victims, and the ways in which cultural anxieties are displaced and projected onto marginalized mothers in films such as 'Fargo', 'Transamerica', 'Gas, Food, Lodging', 'Ordinary People', and Scream.

- State of present knowledge on (homo)sexuality in African literature and film. The contributors describe the need to separate sex from gender, the correlation between gender and sex as categories of human identities, and between gender and creative artistic practices. They look at characterization, textual and filmic structure and plot in terms of identification. The contributors examine among others: the prevailing views on gender and sexuality, differences of viewpoint between literature and film, the evolution of human sexuality throughout African history, and the role of genre and race.

- Description
- The author examines the production and reception of so called 'problem films', for example movies about race and miscegenation, beginning with 1947’s Gentleman’s Agreement and Pinky (1949). She also describes the arrival of the Method school of acting in Hollywood, which demanded that performers inhabit their characters’ lives. She describes how these developments reflected and helped popularize the concept of the liberal citizen in postwar America. She argues that the reception of projected identities offer new perspectives on contemporary identity politics, from feminism to the gay rights movement.

- Description
- This title illustrates the relationship between film history and feminist theory. The book brings together feminist scholars to examine the intersections of feminism, history, and feminist theory in film. Subjects include archival work, visual culture, reception studies, biography, ethno-historical studies, historiography and textual analysis. Essays investigate the different models available in feminist film history and how those feminist strategies might serve as paradigmatic for other sites of feminist intervention. Chapters range chronologically from early cinema to post-feminist texts, organized around the key areas of reception, stars, and authorship. There is a final section that examines the very definitions of feminism (post-feminism), cinema (transmedia), and archives (virtual and online) in place today.

- Description
- In the early part of the twentieth century, migrants made their way from rural homes to cities in record numbers and many traveled west. Los Angeles became a destination. Women flocked to the growing town to join the film industry as workers and spectators, creating a 'New Woman.' Their efforts transformed filmmaking from a marginal business to a cosmopolitan, glamorous, and bohemian one. By 1920, Los Angeles had become the only western city where women outnumbered men. This book explores these relatively unknown new western women and their role in the development of Los Angeles and the nascent film industry. From Mary Pickford's rise to become perhaps the most powerful woman of her age, to the racist moral panics of the post-World War I years that culminated in Hollywood's first sex scandal, Hallett describes how the path through early Hollywood presaged the struggles over modern gender roles that animated the century to come.

- The contributors describe how gender dynamics have shaped the production, reception and criticism of jazz culture. Essays range from a reflection on the female boogie-woogie pianists who played at Café Society in New York during the 1930s and 1940s to interpretations of how the jazzman is represented in Dorothy Baker’s novel Young Man with a Horn (1938) and Michael Curtiz’s film adaptation (1950).
