Key findings from the research program of the Australasian Centre for Policing Research. The Centre examined contemporary issues facing women in Australian police organisations. Also presented are the results from other recent projects conducted at the Centre that contribute to a greater understanding of the factors that impact on the success of women in policing. The focus in this article is on barriers and facilitators to the progression and retention of women in policing. Key issues discussed include discrimination, work life balance, career development and management. Suggested are strategies for improvement which aim to make police organisations an 'employer of choice'.
