- Description
- This book is a translation of and commentary on the biography of Chokyi Dronmaa, a fifteent-century Tibetan princess who was considered the embodiment of an ancient Indian tantric deity, known in Tibetan as Dorje Phagmo. After a personal tragedy the princess became a nun, and in turn, the tantric consort of three religious masters of her era. After her death a young girl was regognized as her reincarnation, the first in a long, powerful, and influential female lineage. Diemberger offers theoretical arguments about the role of reincarnation in Tibetan society and religion, the role of biographies in establishing a lineage, the role of political and financial patronage on religious institutions, the role of Buddhism on society, and the role of women in Buddhism.
