- Description
- In this essay the author investigates an underexplored outlet for the self-fashioning of creative women: portraits, painted by other women, that depict actresses in performance. Like the actresses’ houses that were both homes and stages, the portraits of actresses in their signature roles fused their multiple identities into a construct that celebrated them as performers and as women. Furthermore, the collaborations that these portraits entailed helped to weave a close-knit social network of women artists across theater and the visual arts. ?????????????????????????

- Description
- The form of the Anglophone short story was changing in the 1880s and 90s. New was that realist stories about white, normative middle-class social life were beginning to end without resolution or clear signs of closure. At the same time as short story form was changing, male and female writers turned to the short story because it offered freedom to investigate women’s potential outside the constraints of the marriage plot that was so central to long novels of the mid-century
