- Description
- Collection of articles about the history of Victorian fashion in Britain of the nineteenth century. This book brings together sources that trace the evolution of dress and the social, cultural and political discourses that influenced Victorian fashion. Each section presents a sample of writings and images connected to one of the seven themes: fashion theory, dress reform, crinolines and corsets, men's dress, occasional dress, production and industry and international influences. It combines primary texts by authors such as Oscar Wilde and Sarah Stickney Ellis and illustrations with explanatory notes to offer an overview of the period for both students and researchers. Also analysed are interdisciplinary fields including gender studies and literature. .

- Description
- This collection explores the impact of religion on the formation of men and masculinities in twentieth-century Britain. Religion is explored beyond the traditional boundaries of church worship and institutional structures to encompass the diverse cultures of male sexuality, home life, war, work, immigration, leisure and sectarian politics. Issues of change, such as the decline of single-sex associational settings, the theological shifts and changing fortunes of sects, the varying visibility of queer and homosexual cultures, and the shifting boundaries and collapsing distinctions between clergy and laypeople are explored in depth.

- Description
- Prodigiously learned, alive to the massive social changes of her time, defiant of many Victorian orthodoxies, George Eliot is at once chronicler and analyst, novelist of nostalgia and monumental thinker. In her novel Middlemarch she writes of 'that tempting range of relevancies called the universe'. This volume identifies a range of 'relevancies' that form the various contexts - of her time, and of our own - pertinent to understanding and in the fullest sense appreciating George Eliot. The dimensions of her achievement are illuminated by essays on particular facets of the many contexts - historical, intellectual, political, social, cultural - that inform her work.

- Description
- This book re-evaluates and extends understandings about how work was conceived and what it could entail for women in the premodern period in Europe from c. 1100 to c. 1800. It does this by building on the growth in literature on women’s working experiences, and by adopting new interpretive approaches that expand received assumptions about what constituted 'work' for women.

- Description
- Tracing the rise of conduct literature and the didactic novel over the course of the eighteenth century, this book explores how British women used the didactic novel genre to engage in political debate during and immediately after the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. The first part addresses both conservative and radical texts of the 1790s to show their shared focus on institutional reform and indebtedness to Mary Wollstonecraft, despite their large ideological range. In the second part, the ideas of Hannah More influence the ways authors after the French revolution often linked the didactic with domestic improvement and national unity.

- Description
- This book is an investigation of the biases, contradictions, errors and historical contexts in biographies of British women who published during the long nineteenth century, many of them left unchecked and perpetuated from publication to publication. Fourteen scholars analyze the problems and strengths of biographical material, highlighting the deficiencies and influences that have distorted the portraits of women such as Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Hays, Sydney Owenson, Letitia Elizabeth Landon, Felicia Hemans, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Caroline Norton, Elizabeth Gaskell, Charlotte Brontë, Lady Florence Dixie, George Eliot and Edith Simcox. This study demonstrates that biographies are often more about the biographer than they are about the biographee and that they are products of the time in which they are written.

- Description
- Selected collection of supernatural stories by British female writers from the second half of the nineteenth to the early twentieth century. Some of the authors included in this volume are Charlotte Perkins Gillman, Mary Wilkins Freeman, Olive Schreiner, Olivia Howard Dunbar and Mary Austin. Women at that time often wrote supernatural stories such as about spiritualism, cosmic horror and dark metaphors. They often introduced social commentary into their works, like the role of women and class struggles. Many women included in this book were involved in the suffragette or labor reform movement. As the work as a domestic was one of the few options for women from the lower classes, several stories were told from either the domestics in a wealthy household or the very poor viewpoint. Many of these women took up writing out of financial need and/or wrote under pseudonyms, using their married name or without any name.
