In 1401, Christine de Pizan (1365–1430) wrote a letter to the provost of Lille criticizing the 'Romance of the Rose' for its misogynistic depictions of women. The editor has collected and translated letters, sermons and fictional works that participate in or surround this debate. Pizan’s supporters and detractors are heard alongside her own voice. The editor also introduces the life, thought and influence of Christine de Pisan. An introduction to the position of women in early modern Europe is written by the editors of the series.
