- Description
- Ninety-five prostitutes, differentiated into five intra-occupational categories based on their method of operating, and equal number of nonprostitute demographically matched controls, were interviewed and administered. The data reveal that prostitutes on the upper end of the intra-occupational scale, such as call girls and those working in-house, are not significantly different from the nonprostitute controls. At the other end of the intra-occupational scale, street-walkers appear to be less mature and more dependent than their controls. Part-time prostitutes, such as housewives and drug dependent subjects, yield major indices of psychopathology.

- Description
- The existence of an occupational label like 'prostitute' tells us as little as the occupational label 'banker' or 'lawyer'. To compare a lawyer in ecclesiastical courts or a Florentine banker of sixteenth century with a small-town district attorney, is a remarkable simplification.

- Description
- I have tried to look at prostitution as an occupation. This occupation is one of the most despised in the Western world. As one result, non-scientific literature on the subject is marked by its lack of objectivity and its preoccupation.

- Description
- All societies except those with the most rudimentary division of labor frequently have persons whose vocational persuits are in violation of formal norms and are therefore deviant if not illegal. Illegal practitioners, like members of regular occupations, exhibit craftsmanship values and pride in the product or service they render. A young attractive female, for example, who yearns for a luxurious lifestyle, but has no talent to catapult her into stardom and no prospective wealthy husband may become a high-priced call girl.
