- Description
- In this book the author takes a gendered approach to labor conflicts, anticolonial struggles, and citizenship in modern Lebanon. The author looks at the conditions and experiences of women workers at the French Tobacco industry. Looking at culturally inscribed roles for Middle Eastern women, the book highlights traditions of public activism and militancy among rural women that are in turn adapted to the spaces of the factory. Women employed distinct strategies involving kinship, sectarian, gender, and class ties to enhance their work conditions and social benefits. The author argues that the condition of women can only be explained by exploring the shifting relationship between culture, societal arrangements, and economic settings.

- Description
- Should immigrants have to pass a literacy test in order to enter the United States? Progressive-Era Americans debated this question for more than twenty years, and by the time the literacy test became law in 1917, the debate had transformed the way Americans understood immigration, and created the logic that shaped immigration restriction policies throughout the twentieth century. Jeanne Petit argues that the literacy test debate was about much more than reading ability or the virtues of education. It also tapped into broader concerns about the relationship between gender, sexuality, race, and American national identity. The congressmen, reformers, journalists, and pundits who supported the literacy test hoped to stem the tide of southern and eastern European immigration.

- Description
- This book connects the 19th- and 20th-century migrations in global transcultural perspective. It emphasizes macro-regional internal interactions between and within macro-regions. The essays look at migrant workers experiences in constraining frames and the options they seize or constraints they circumvent. It traces the development from 19th-century proletarian migrations to industries and plantations across the globe to 20th- and 21st-century domestics and caregiver migrations. It integrates male and female migration and shows how women have always been present in mass migrations.

- Description
- Descendants of indentured laborers who migrated from India to the Caribbean (between 1845 and 1917) identify themselves as Indian. In this book Nirjana draws on nineteenth-century travel narratives, anthropological and historical studies of Trinidad, Hindi film music, and the lyrics, performance, and reception of genres of popular music to argue that perceptions of Indian female sexuality in Trinidad have long been central to the formation and disruption of dominant narratives of nationhood, modernity, and normative sexuality in India.

- Description
- Today's political ideas over immigration highlights the plight of the working class in the United States as no other issue has recently done. The political status of immigrants exposes the dynamics of the 'new working class', which includes the former labor aristocracy, women, and people of color. This new working class suffers exploitation in advanced industrial countries as the social cost of capitalism's success in a neoliberal and globalized political economy. In this book, Kathleen Arnold analyzes the role of the state's power in creating this condition of severe inequality for the most marginalized sectors of the population. She focuses especially on the values of asceticism derived from the Protestant work ethic to explain how they function as ideological justification for the exercise of prerogative power by the state. As a counter to this repressive set of values, she develops the notion of “authentic love” borrowed from Simone de Beauvoir as a possible approach for dealing with the complex issues of exploitation in liberal democracy today.

- This collection of essays on the history of Latinas uses geography and migration as categories of analysis. Movement, location and especially destination have been crucial to the history of Latinas, and of the influence of Latinas on American history. In the words of editors and authors : 'we seek a fuller recounting of Latina history through locating gendered ethnoracial identities within matrices of place as landscape and metaphor, of migration and settlement, and of political space.'

- Description
- In this anthology of essays the contributors address the ways in which western women have experienced the twentieth century. The writings go beyond the categorisations of gender, class, race, and ethnicity by providing a deeper understanding of women and distribution of power through examinations of generations, family and career, religion, sexual orientation, geography, and political preferences. The collection is arranged around five themes: politics and power, women and mobility, staying on the land, uncovering women's voices, and reshaping cultural images and ideas.
