The authors of this volume highlight women’s experiences of social class, as family members, before the law, and as authors, artists, and patrons, as well as the workings of gender in art and literature.

- Description
- Throughout the years, women (in particular aristocratic women) have built important collections and used them to their own advantage (to make a statement of lineage, power, cultural heritage or religious preferences). The authors describe women patrons and collectors from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries. Different types of collections by women are analyzed to give a voice to a group of important female collectors.

- Description
- The essays in this collection explore new perspectives on the histories of bodies and sexualities, but also on issues that are allready the subject of major historiographical debates. The author emphasizes the historical distinctiveness of ideas about bodies, sex and desires and demonstrates the notable continuities that have existed over time. The essays draw attention to how ideas about sexuality, bodies and desires can be traced back through older knowledge and thinking.

- Description
- This book traces sex and desire in Muslim cultures through a collection of chapters that span the 9th to 21st centuries. The first part of the book examines how people constructed, discussed and challenged sexual norms from the Abbasid to the Ottoman period. The second part looks at literary and cinematic Arab cultural production as a site for the construction and transgression of gender norms. The third part builds on feminist historiography and social anthropology to question simplistic dichotomies and binaries.

- Description
- This publication reevaluates the nature and extent of women’s political alliances, based on archival discoveries as well as new work on politics and law. Grouped into three sections - domestic, court, and kinship alliances - these essays investigate historical documents, drama, and poetry, insisting that female alliances, much like male friendship discourse, had political meaning in early modern England. Female writers discussed are, amongst others, the Cavendish Sisters, Anne Clifford, Aemilia Lanyer, and Katherine Philips.
