- Description
- Book about conversation on rape and rape culture. An article the author wrote about the perception of rape in the 1980s after surviving gang-rape in Mumbai, went viral in 2012 as a result of a gang-rape case in New Delhi. In response to that, she wrote an article in New York Times about healing from rape, which was widely circulated. In this book the author shares her own story and that of other people's lives about surviving as a victim and empowerment in this #MeToo age.

- Description
- Explores the history of white men’s sexual violence against black women in the United States. Underlines the significance of black women’s opposition to this violence as a part of the civil rights struggles. Special attention is paid to the activism of Rosa Parks. The author argues that that Parks’ radical politics, her role as an organizer against rape and the importance of this organizing in the emergence of the civil rights movement has been neglected in historical narratives.

- Description
- Freedman demonstrates that our definition of rape has depended heavily on dynamics of political power and social privilege. The long-dominant view of rape in America envisioned a brutal attack on a chaste white woman by a male stranger, usually an black man. From the early nineteenth century, advocates for women’s rights and racial justice challenged this narrow definition and the sexual and political power of white men that it sustained. Between the 1870s and the 1930s, at the height of racial segregation and lynching, and amid the campaign for woman suffrage, women’s rights supporters and African American activists tried to expand understandings of rape in order to gain legal protection from coercive sexual relations, assaults by white men on black women, street harassment, and the sexual abuse of children. By redefining rape, they sought to redraw the very boundaries of citizenship. Freedman narrates the victories, defeats, and limitations of these and other reform efforts. The modern civil rights and feminist movements, she points out, continue to grapple with both the insights and the dilemmas of these first campaigns to redefine rape in American law and culture.

- Description
- This book studies sexual violence during the war. It discusses the determinants of wartime rape, presents statistical tests of the formulated hypotheses and describes three in-depth case studies based on interviews with ex-combatants and victims: civil war in Sierra Leone (1991-2002), Timor-Leste (1975-1999) and El Salvador (1980-1992). The book describes how rape may be used by combatants to create cohesion among them. It considers and tests three sets of explanations: opportunism/greed, ethnic hatred and gender inequality. The findings demonstrate that current narratives about the cause of rape too frequently focus on e.g. the type of conflict or features of the country while ignoring the type of the armed group.

- Description
- Rape has long been a part of war, and recent conflicts in Bosnia, Rwanda, and Darfur demonstrate that it may be becoming an even more integral strategy of modern warfare. The incidence and consequences of rape in the Vietnam War ( 1961- 1975 ) have been largely overlooked. Using testimony, oral accounts, literature, and film, this book focuses on the rape and sexual abuse of Vietnamese women by U.S. soldiers during the Vietnam War, and argues that the erasure and elision of these practices of sexual violence in the U.S. popular imagination perpetuate the violent masculinity central to contemporary U.S. military culture. The recognition of this violence is important not just for an accurate historical record, but also to understand the Vietnam veteran’s trauma, which often stems from his aggression rather than his victimization.

- Description
- A new reflection on rape in wartime, this collection of essays presents 14 case studies, covering conflicts from across the globe, including Greece, Bangladesh, Columbia, Chechnya, Israel, India, Nigeria and Europe. Providing a truly global and interdisciplinary approach - including offerings from experts in legal, anthropological, cultural and gender studies - the authors examine the context in which wartime rape occurs, the specificity of rape as a universally recognised transgression, the place of large scale rape in public memories of war and the long term legacies of rape. They also confront the challenge of writing about intimate forms of violence from both the human and scientific perspective.

- The author examines the evolution of the rape narrative in twentieth-century literature: What accounts for the persistence of the old story of male power and violence, and female passivity and penetrability? How has the story changed over the course of the twentieth century? She investigates the manner in which the violation of the female body serves as a metaphor for a synthesis of masculinity and political economy.
