- Description
- 'Feminism and Criminal Justice' is a study of the involvement of the women's movement in England and Wales with criminal justice policy in the period c. 1920-70. Challenging the assumption that feminist interest in criminal justice only began with the emergence of campaigns over rape and domestic violence and of feminist criminology in the 1970s, the book argues that criminal justice matters have been a long-term concern of the women's movement. Taking the topic from the 'suffragette' era to the early days of 'second wave' feminism, the book traces a network of individuals and organizations that took a special interest in this area of policy and examines their campaigns. A wide range of topics are covered including youth justice, the law on prostitution, the campaign for women jurors, the care of victims, women professionals and volunteers in the justice system and the movement for the abolition of the death penalty. - Description
- This collection brings together eleven essays--eight previously published and three new--that document the evolving relationship between academic feminism and political feminism as Freedman has studied and lived it. .Following an introduction that presents a map of the personal and intellectual trajectory of Freedman's work, the first section of essays, on the origins and strategies of women's activism in U.S. history, reiterates the importance of valuing women in a society that has long devalued their contributions. The second section, on the maintenance of sexual boundaries, explores the malleability of both sexual identities and sexual politics. Underlying the collection is an inquiry into the changing meanings of gender, sexuality, and politics during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries along with a concern for applying the insights of women's history broadly, from the classroom to the courthouse

- Description
- This book analyzes how reformers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries perceived delinquent girls and their often troubled lives. The author examines the cases of vulnerable young women to reveal the centrality of sex, class, gender, and disability in the formation of scientific and social reform. Rembis recounts the contestations between largely working-class teenage girls and the mostly female reformers and professionals who attempted to diagnose and treat them based on changing ideas of eugenics, gender, and impairment. He shows how generational roles and prevailing notions of gender and sexuality influenced reformers to restrict, control, and institutionalize undesirable 'defectives' within society, and he details the girls' attempts to influence methods of diagnosis, discipline, and reform.
