- Description
- On April 26th 2015, when radical Islamist opposition forces in Syria announced the 'Great Attack' on Aleppo, young women of various ethnicities and religions backgrounds sought refuge in Le Pont gallery. They were mostly former participants of Art Camping, a collaborative art project initiated by Le Pont in responsive to the outbreak of the Syrian conflict in Aleppo in 2012. This book documents the photo sessions Issa Touma, photographer and director of the gallery, held at Le Pont during the week of the 'Great Attack', like a last message from Aleppo. It tells the story of a group of girls in their customary dressing, stating their fears during the crises, scared about losing either their life or lifestyle.

- Description
- When her stage play The Vagina Monologues became a runaway hit and an international sensation, Eve Ensler emerged as a powerful voice and champion for women everywhere. Now the playwright gives us her first major work written exclusively for the printed page. The book is a look at our security-obsessed world and how we can truly experience freedom by letting go of the deceptive notion of vigilant “protection.” Ensler draws on personal experiences and interviews with burka-clad women in Afghanistan: female prisoners in upstate New York: survivors at the Superdome after Katrina: and anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan–sharing snapshots that chronicle a post-9/11 existence in which hyped obsession for safety and security has undermined our humanity. The us-versus-them mentality has closed our minds and hardened our compassionate hearts.

- Description
- Afghanistan is regarded as a classical patriarchal society, where social tradition, religious doctrine and socio-economic and cultural backwardness have made women second-class citizens. But what has been the nature of life for women in Afghanistan? How have they been treated, both in the private sphere and in public? How did they resist mistreatment during the war inside Afghanistan, in refugee camps or in diaspora? Who are the sponsors and perpetrators of violence against Afghanistani women? And what are the connections between Islam, local customs, the mistreatment of women, and women’s connectedness to revolution and jihad? This book provides answers to these questions through a study of the life and short stories of the Afghan writer, Maryam Mahboob.
