- Description

- Description
- This book places Edith Wharton and her writing in the context of fashion history and shows how dress lies at the very center of her thinking about art and culture. The study traces American patronage of the Paris couture and places Wharton’s characters in these establishments to offer new readings of her well-known novels. Less known are Wharton’s knowledge of and involvement in the craft of garment making in her tales of seamstresses, milliners, and textile workers, as well as in her creation of workshops in Paris during the First World War to employ Belgian and French seamstresses and promote the value of handmade garments in a world given to machine-driven uniformity of design and labor.

- Description
- Feminists have argued that the Barbie doll perpetuates unrealistic standards of feminine beauty and undermines the credibility of women, that her long, slender plastic limbs and tiny waist fetishize the female body in unnatural ways and that her mature, overtly fashionable image promotes consumerism and superficiality over and above women's liberty and intellect. Peers analyses in depth the doll's associations with concepts of femininity and fashionability.

- Description
- In most countries of the world people today are dressed in very similar clothing. This book gives an analysis of the process by which this has come about. At the same time it takes seriously those places where this process has not occurred, or has been reversed, and provides explanations for these developments. The first part of this book recounts how the cultural, political and economic power of Europe and, from the later nineteenth century North America, has provided an impetus for the adoption of whatever was at that time standard Western dress. Set against this, Ross shows how the adoption of European style dress, or its rejection, has always been a political act, performed most frequently in order to claim equality with colonial masters, more often a male option, or to stress distinction from them, which women, perhaps under male duress, more frequently did.
