- Description
- First published in 2018. This book is published on the occasion of the exhibition on the Swedish painter Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) titled 'Hilma af Klint: paintings for the future' in Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, United States, from October 12, 2018 to April, 23, 2019. Within the arc of her production from naturalistic work in the 1890s to watercolours in the 1940s, the book and exhibition focuses on the period 1906-1920. Hilma af Klint created a body of work known as 'The paintings for the temple' that broke from the dominant painting style and are primarily abstract. Her early arrival at abstraction - before modernists as Vasily Kandinsky and Piet Mondriaan - is a radical effort to find visual expression for a transcendent, spiritual reality beyond the observable world.
