- Discusses violence in gender relations in the Middle East, ranging from domestic to political levels. The author pays attention to gender-based power structures, opportunities for female power and outcomes resulting from female agency, and the impulse toward obedience embedded into patriarchal and authoritarian systems. He argues that institutionalized violence in gender relations is fundamental to the systems of domestic control, authoritarian states and political violence. The topics include domestic violence, female genital mutilation, honor killing, the role of islam, family structures, gender discrimination and normalization of violence.
