- Description
- Social inequalities have consequences for the everyday lives of women and girls where power relations, institutional and socio-cultural practices make them disadvantaged in terms of disaster preparedness and experience. Chapters in this book unravel how gender and masculinity intersect with age, ethnicity, sexuality and class in specific contexts around the globe. It looks at the various kinds of difficulties for particular groups before, during and after disastrous events such as typhoons, flooding, landslides and earthquakes. It explores how issues of gender hierarchies, patriarchal structures and masculinity are closely related to gender segregation, institutional codes of behaviour and to a denial of environmental crisis.

- Description
- Building on the work of the author’s ‘Dislocating masculinity : comparative ethnographies (1994)’, this collection provides a fresh perspective on gender dynamics under neoliberalism. Bringing together a series of short case studies drawn from new ethnographic fieldwork, its subjects range from the experiences of working-class men in Putins Russia to colonial masculinities in Southern Rhodesia, and from young British Muslim men to amateur footballers in Jamaica.

- Description
- This book focuses on key themes that reveal how gendered relations, ideologies, and practices shape human bodies. At the same time, it shows how human bodies are linked to other significant axes of inequality based on racial ethnic group, disability, sexuality, class, culture, religion, age, and nation. This second edition incorporates sixteen new selections on such topics as evolution and motherhood: breastfeeding: breast cancer: the effects of height on men: job discrimination and transgendered people: world champion runner Caster Semenya and sex verification: disability, gender, and embodiment: and Palestinian female suicide bombers.

- Description
- This reader examines the ways in which work influences our roles in both the public and private spheres. Goodman has selected a key set of essays that examine influential arguments on such themes as the origins of the gendered division of labor: historical trends and economic transformations that affect and are affected by women's position in market and non-market work: the effects of occupational and job segregation by sex on status, pay, and promotion: the ways in which formal and informal organizational culture shape and in turn are shaped by gender in professional and managerial positions: class consciousness among wage-earning men and women: the different forms of gender discrimination that women and men face in the workplace: the problems working parents face and the ways in which different societies, subcultures and genders cope: and alternative approaches to improving the lives of working women and their families in the global economy.
