- Description
- In this study Bolt sheds light on the differences in the area of race, class and internationalism, which flourished in an era of political reaction, economic insecurity, polarising nationalism and resurgent anti-feminism. The author reveals how the conflicts were seized upon and publicised by contemporaries, and how the activists themselves were forced to confront the increasingly complex tensions. in particular, the American and british women's movements grew further apart as British women became more conscious of American money, expectation of influence and opposition to the existence of Britain's empire.

- Description
- The First World War marked a crisis for the burgeoning women's movements in Europe and in the United States. The Women's Movement in Wartime explores the responses of the women's movements to the war in all of the major belligerent nations - Germany, Austria/Hungary, France, Britain (and its Empire), the United States and Russia. The contributors explore the impact of war on early feminist thought and activism, covering key topics including the interpretation of a specifically 'womanly' response to the war, women's relationship with the state and with the nation, the status of women's wartime service, women's role as mothers in wartime, women's suffrage, peace and the aftermath of war, and women's guilt and responsibility.

- Description
- In this book Nielsen illustrates the conflict over gender ideologies that split America in the 1920s. Nielsen uncovered evidence of a massive right wing conspiracy against the women’s movement in the 1920s, supported by the American Legion and a War Department determined to prevent further reductions in military spending. In this time when a president jails citizens without charge or trial and political appointees secure their power by spreading unreasonable fear and suspicion, few histories are as timely as Un-American Womanhood.

- Description
- Each essay describes an aspect of the battle that lasted from the 1850s to the passage of the suffrage amendment in 1920. From the movement's antecedents in the minds of women like Mary Wollstonecraft and Frances Wright, to the historic gathering at Seneca Falls in 1848, to the civil disobedience during World War I orchestrated by the National Woman's Party. Contributors focus on how the suffrage battle was interwoven with constitutional issues at the federal and state level and how the suffrage struggle played out in different regions, especially the West and the South, as well as the activities of opponents to women's voting. Baker's introductory essay sets the stage for revisiting suffrage by making explicit the similarities and differences in interpretations of suffrage and shows how the movement intersected with other events in American history and cannot be studied in isolation from them.
