- Description
- The first part of the book discusses the bio-medical background to controversial contemporary issues in reproductive medicine. Modern reproductive medicine advanced to create means of fertility control and fertility treatment. Other areas have developed, such as embryology, prenatal diagnosis, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, embryonic stem cell research and fetal surgery. Part of the book describes in detail, and with anecdotes, the history of research and practices at the KU Leuven. The fundamental question that runs through this book is whether modern reproductive medicine, based on personalist ethics and practised at progressive Catholic universities in Belgium and Holland, is compatible with the Catholic doctrine. If so, has the time come for these universities to take a stand and leave the catacombs?
