- Description
- This book looks at the experiences of women across Europe from 1945 to the present day. Europe at the end of World War II was a sorry testimony to the human condition: awash in corpses, the infrastructure devastated, food and fuel in such short supply. The vast majority of citizens on whom survival depended, in the postwar years, were women. This book charts the involvement of women in postwar reconstruction through the Cold War and post Cold-War years with chapters on the economic, social, and political dynamism that characterized Europe from the 1950s onwards. The case studies show difference and diversity across Europe whilst also setting the experience of women in a particular country within the broader historical issues and trends, in such topics as work, professionalization, sexuality, consumerism, migration, and activism. The introduction and conclusion provide an overview that integrates the chapters into the more general history of this important period.

- Description
- Analysis of the manifestations of the 'modern girl', who emerged as a global phenomenon in the 1920s and 1930s. The authors describe how the economic structures and cultural flows that shaped a particular form of femininity crossed national and imperial boundaries, the gendered dynamics of racial formation, and how images and ideas of the 'modern girl' were used to critique nationalist and imperial agendas.

- Description
- Reflecting the stimulating diversity of early cinematic styles, technologies, and narrative forms, essays address a range of topics - from the dangerous sexuality of the urban 'flâneuse' to the childlike femininity exemplified by Mary Pickford, from the Shanghai film industry to Italian diva films - looking along the way at birth-control sensation films, French crime serials, 'war actualities', and the stylistic influence of art deco. The contributors bring a number of disciplinary frameworks to bear, including not only film studies but also postcolonial studies, dance scholarship, literary analysis, philosophies of the body, and theories regarding modernism and postmodernism.
