- Description
- This publication highlights how, from the 16th to the 19th centuries, European women, as readers and writers, contributed to the construction of national identities. The book, which presents twenty countries, is divided into four parts. First, it examines how women belonged to nations: they represented territories and political or religious communities in their own style. Second, it deals with the ways in which women wrote the nation: the network of relationships in which they were involved that were not necessarily national or territorial. The legitimation that women writers succeeded in finding is emphasised in the third section, while in the fourth is analysed how and why women were open to the outside world, beyond the country's borders.

- Description
- Increasing numbers of women, including mothers, in employment has become a major European objective, for reasons of both gender equality and economic regeneration. Their past allocation to the home may not have been fair to women, but it did ensure that caring and domestic work was achieved. The new scenario has brought with it considerable social change, including the erosion of the 'traditional' family, declining fertility, and growing problems of work-life 'balance'. The authors addres these topics, drawing on quantitative and qualitative research materials from Britain, France, The Netherlands, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Portugal. Many of the chapters undertake comparative analysis, drawing on evidence from these countries, thereby facilitating a realistic evaluation of the policy options available. Wider questions, including the consequence of these changes for gender and class inequalities, are also addressed.

- The multidisciplinary contributions, which cover a variety of theoretical approaches, are all concerned with transitional labor markets and labor market policy in the new global economic environment. The authors first address current arguments and controversies regarding appropriate institutions for the formation and implementation of labor market and employment policies. They move on to focus on the policies and problems associated with enhancing gender equality in terms of labor market integration and transitions. Finally, they examine new institutional arrangements that they believe will both enhance the performance of transitional labor markets and improve the management of social risks. .Combining a theoretical approach with empirical research and a strong policy emphasis, the scope and diversity of this book will ensure a broad audience among economists, political scientists and academics in the fields of labor market theory and policy.

- Description
- This book reports on the conference 'A Gender Agenda: Asia-Europe Dialogue—New Visions and Perspectives for Women and Men,' held in 2001 in Chiba, Japan. The conference signified the first occasion for women and men with various backgrounds and expertise to gather from throughout Asia and Europe to discuss gender issues from diverse points of view. The conference aimed at defining the common challenges that Asia and Europe are facing today, and to seek suitable social and economic systems for women and men in a changing environment resulting from factors such as globalization and the information technology revolution. An overview, a summary of discussion, and eight background papers—four from Asia and four from Europe—are included. The overview analyzes deliberations at the conference in light of past initiatives to promote women's status and mainstream gender perspectives in political, social, and economic systems.

- Description
- This book aims to map the diversity of meanings of gender equality across Europe - including the European Union and member states such as Austria, the Netherlands, Hungary, Slovenia, Greece, and Spain - and reflects on the contested concept of gender equality. The different meanings of gender equality are explored comparatively in relation to the issues of family policies, domestic violence, and gender inequality in politics, while specific national contexts discuss the issues of prostitution (Austria, Slovenia), migration (the Netherlands), homosexual rights (Spain), and antidiscrimination (Hungary). Each chapter will provide insights on the ongoing theoretical and political debate about gender equality.

- Description
- This book asks if, and to what extent, gender divisions in working life are changing. The contributors discuss the implications from a labour market perspective and a family-work level perspective, which are combined to examine if and where patterns of gender integration can be found. Research from several European countries is presented, as well as from the US, to provide comparative and international perspectives. .The volume provides suggestions for integration at different levels of society and, by applying a multidisciplinary approach and illustrating developments on different analytical levels, the authors further the discussion on how integration can be pursued.

- Description
- This book draws on both historical and contemporary European case-studies to offer an account of the relationship between gender and well-being. The authors focus on key discussions of the changing conceptions of well-being from early twentieth century calculations of the relationship between income and the cost-of-living, to more recent critiques from feminist writers. Their answers allow them to significantly challenge the issue with the idea that well-being is not only associated with income or opulence but also relates to more abstract concepts including capabilities, freedom, and agency of different women and men and will be of considerable interest to economic and social historians, sociologists of health, gender, sexuality and economists.

- Description
- Competing claims on time in work and family life have become inherent, unavoidable features of the Western world. Many people feel torn between work and family not just because their households increasingly juggle competing responsibilities, but also as job expectations and parenting standards have intensified. This book aims to deepen our understanding of a variety of conditions that influence the successes and difficulties experienced in attempting to equally accommodate both work and private lives. The contributors argue that conditions which create competing claims on time can originate from the organization, from the household, or from both: the contributors thus apply a multi-level and multi-actor approach to the problem. They pay detailed attention to time use and time pressures, and focus not only on the causes of disturbed balances between work and care, but also on solutions to these competing claims. This study gives perspectives from across Europe, US, and Australia.

- Description
- This collection explores family relations in two types of 'migrant families' in Europe: mixed families and transnational families. Based on qualitative fieldwork and surveys, the contributors analyse gender and intergenerational relations from a variety of standpoints and migratory flows. In their examination of family life in a migratory context, the authors develop theoretical approaches from the social sciences that go beyond migration studies, such as intersectionality, the solidarity paradigm, care circulation, reflexive modernization and gender convergence theory.

- Description
- This volume places female criminality within its everyday context. It reveals how their socio-economic and cultural contexts provided women with 'agency' against a range of European backdrops, despite a fundamentally patriarchal criminal justice system, and includes in-depth analysis of original sources to show how changing living standards, employment, schooling and welfare arrangements had a direct impact on the quality of life of working class women, their risk of becoming involved in crime, and the likelihood of being prosecuted for it.
