- Description
- Drawing on the perspective of aging bodies in order to approach the study of contemporary Canadian women's fiction, the author seeks to understand body criticism in general because elderly physical experiences lay bare crucial assumptions of thinking through the body. It also investigates the mechanisms and effects of constructions of aging in order to combat the automatically negative reactions most readers have to the topic of old age.

- Description
- Writing against the grain of popular perception and moral panic, Shauna Pomerantz offers a look at the importance of style for girls in school. Fighting assumptions that girls today are dupes of media and capitalism, she argues that style is a significant cultural practice that demands to be taken seriously in the lives of girls. Based on an ethnography at an urban, multicultural high school in Vancouver's east side, Pomerantz contextualizes style as a form of expression that enables girls to produce fluid and multiple identities, social networks, individual images, expressions of agency and power, and cultural affiliations. She strikes a balance between making visible the impact of external forces on the girls in her study, and arguing the poststructuralist position that the girls have agency.

- Description
- The achievement of the vote in 1918 is often celebrated as a triumphant moment in the onward, upward advancement of Canadian women. In this book the author shows that the struggle for equality included gains and losses, inclusions and exclusions, depending on a woman’s race, class, and location within the nation. It tells a more inclusive story and exposes fissures of inequality as well as their weaknesses in the face of resistance, optimism and protest.

- Description
- 'The contributions in this volume describe and analyse how in a number of countries – France, the USA, Turkey, Canada, Mexico, the Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark – distinctions between migrants were made and justified in policies and in public debates. .All authors except Schacher examine the period after the Second World War. Schacher analyses the Armenian refugee issue in the 1920s, pointing out striking continuities with more recent debates. All authors focus on gender as the primary analytical category. In the conclusion, we make comparisons between the countries and between the categories of migrants examined. All authors address the intersection of gender with other categories of analysis.'

- This book is a collection of essays on the writing of the Canadian short story writer and Nobel laureate Alice Munro (1931). The volume covers the entirety of Munro’s career, from the first stories she published in the early 1950s to her final books. It offers a range of approaches and interpretive strategies, and provides many new perspectives, reconsidered positions and analyses that will enhance the reading, teaching, and appreciation of Munro’s work. .Following the editors’ introduction—which surveys Munro’s recurrent themes, explains the design of the book, and summarizes each contribution—Munro biographer Robert Thacker contributes a substantial bio-critical introduction to her career. The book is then divided into three sections, focusing on Munro’s characteristic forms, themes, and most notable literary effects.

- Description
- Princesses are significant figures in girls’ culture in the United States and around the world. This anthology brings together international and interdisciplinary perspectives on the multitude of princess cultures, continuously redrawn and recast by grownups and girls from the Ancien Régime to the New Millennium. Essays critically examine the gendered, racialized, classed, and ethnic meanings of royal figures and fairytale and pop culture princesses inscribed in folk tales, movies, cartoons, video games, dolls, and imitated in play and performance. Focusing on the representation and reception of the princess in western and non-western ideologies, this collection examines the position of princess cultures mediating the lives, imaginations, and identities of girls from toddlers to teenagers - and beyond.
