- Description
- Interviewing women of different ages and backgrounds, Al-Jawaheri examines the impact of the UN economic sanctions of Iraq on women's employment status, on different forms of female education, on gender relations inside the family, on violence against women, and on women's domestic responsibilities. She adds a chapter on the history of the relations of Iraqi women and the state, with emphasis on the legislation and characteristics of female labour participation. She demonstrates that the explosion of violence and intimidation against women should not have taken people by surprise. The deterioration of gender relations was already taking place during the decade of international sanctions. The war and subsequent upsurge intensified problems.

- Description
- This book tells the story of the first all-female police unit deployed by India to the UN peacekeeping mission in Liberia in January 2007. Lesley J. Pruitt investigates how the unit was originated, developed, and implemented, offering an important historical record of this unique initiative. Examining precedents in policing in the troop-contributing country and recent developments in policing in the host country, the book offers contextually rich examination of all-female units, explores the potential benefits of and challenges to women’s participation in peacekeeping, and illuminates broader questions about the relationship between gender, peace, and security.

- Description
- This work takes the experience of women of armed conflict, matches it with existing provisions of international law, and investigates reasons for the silence of the latter in relation to these events for women. It is a bread-based critique of international humanitarian law (IHL) from a gender perspective. The contribution of the United Nations, throught its focus on human rights, to improving the protection of women in armed conflict is also considered. The authors underscore the need for new approaches to the issue of women and armed conclict, and canvass a range of options for moving forward.
