Drawing on recent research on masculinity, the authors address the gendering of English Studies within higher education. They explore the history and educational practices of what has been widely characterised as a 'soft' subject and deal with questions about the nature and negotiation of male symbolic power in a subject group where the large majority of students are female. They draw together the study of text and narrative with insight into the actual experience of the classroom.
