- Description
- Most countries in Africa have written constitutions, which guarantee both men and women equal rights before the law and prohibit any discrimination on the grounds of sex, race, colour and religion. However, the social life of women is influenced and shaped by customary laws and practices and most disputes are resolved outside the court system. Many women do not know their rights and entitlements. Others dare not claim them due to the adverse effects such a move would bear on them in given social contexts. In recognition of this, the Heinrich Böll Foundation held a conference in Nairobi 2001 to share ideas and plan strategies on how this situation can be addressed.
