- Description
- This book describes the British girl guide movement between the first and second world war. It explores the movement's Victorian origins and its ideas and activities in England, Canada and India, using among others archival records, periodicals, diaries and photo albums. It also compares responses from different groups, revealing how white, Indian and native girls and women in different parts of the British empire engage with the guide movement's ideals and practices. Besides, it shows within the movement's program the ongoing negiotations between adults, adolescents and children as well as between local, national, imperial and global contexts. For example, guide - mostly white - leaders tried to both encourage global sisterhood and control the growth of the movement in different colonies.
