- Description
- The twelve chapters in this volume examine different aspects of female characters in Gnostisism and Manicheism. Central to the study are the teksts of the Coptic library of Nag Hammadi. In the first part of the book. 'Images and symbols', the author discovers hidden meanings in some of the female mythological figures, some of them being derived from other traditions (such as Jewish and Greek). The second part of the book, 'Transitions', researches womens's names in titles of the Nag Hammadi library and asks wether there is a relation between a female protagonist and the choise of literary genre. The third part, 'History and reality', offers a reconstruction of the portraits of some women, especially Manichean women, whose traits become clearer on close reading the direct scriptures, the heretic sources, and using the archeological contributions.
