- Description
- This book focuses on data available about actual trends in girls’ uses of violence, the scholars here find that by virtually any measure, incidents of girls’ violence are going down, not up. Additionally, rather than attributing girls’ violence to personality or to girls becoming “more like boys,” the contributors examine the contexts that produce violence in girls, demonstrating how addressing the unique problems that confront girls in dating relationships, families, school hallways and classrooms, and in distressed urban neighborhoods can help reduce girls’ use of violence.

- Description
- This book presents an analysis of the linkages between inequality, development, and growth from a feminist economics perspective. It examines connections between intergroup inequality and macroeconomic outcomes, considering various channels through which gender, growth, and development interact. Using a range of analytical methods, country studies, and levels of aggregation, the contributors argue that inequalities based on gender, race, ethnicity, and class undermine the ability of people to provision and live fully to their capabilities. Authors examine the effect of macroeconomic policies and economic growth on inequalities in material resources and well-being, as well as the effects of inequality on economic growth. Finally, the volume offers a rich array of policy options for promoting gender equality as both an intrinsic goal and a step toward improving well-being and broadly-shared development. This book was published as a special issue of Feminist Economics.

- Description
- Once an occupation traditionally associated with poor rural women who migrated to cities in search of work, paid domestic work is now a transnational occupational niche for millions of women from Asia's less well-off countries-including the Philippines, Indonesia, Burma, Sri Lanka, and India-who embark on sojourns to the richer countries of the world-such as Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Canada, the Middle East and parts of Europe-in search of a more lucrative livelihood and promising futures for their families and themselves. .Transnational domestic workers are important contributors to the economies of the countries that receive them and also to their own countries through the growing volume of money sent home. Despite their crucial role in the global economy, transnational domestic workers, mostly female, continue to migrate and work under unfavorable conditions and remain highly vulnerable to exploitation. .This volume is an attempt to enhance not only academic research on transnational domestic workers, but also the ability of governments, NGOs and civil society groups-especially in sending and receiving countries-to derive appropriate policies and make recommendations to address the problems directly confronted by Asian transnational domestic workers.

- Description
- Taking advantage of the recent surge in research in this area, the editors present the latest findings of both qualitative and quantitative studies. Each section begins with an overview of the literature on current research in the field, followed by individual studies. The first section investigates the relationship between gender and information technology among preteens and adolescents, with each study considering what could lead girls' interest in computing to diverge from boys': the second section, on higher education, includes a nationwide study of computing programs and a cross-national comparison of computing education: the final section, on pathways into the IT workforce, considers both traditional and non-traditional paths to computing careers.

- Description
- The relationship between gender and nationalism is a compelling issue that is receiving increasing coverage in literature. With case studies covering Argentina, Ecuador, Bolivia and Mexico, this book explores these links in the context of Latin America. The work opens by outlining four dimensions in the relationship between gender and nationalism. These are: the contribution of women to nation building and their exclusion from it by the state and its institutions: the role of women in contemporary ethnic and nationalist movements: the place of the female body in the myths and traditions surrounding the nation: and the role of women in forging the intellectual and artistic culture of the nation. It then provides explorations of these themes, with chapters covering the debate on multiculturalism and gender in the construction of the nation, the struggles of ethnic women to participate politically in their communities and studies of the first Mexican filmmaker, Mimi Derrba and the indigenous heroine Dolores Cacuango from Ecuador.

- Description
- The authors in this book examine twenty-five years of change in women's employment and address the challenges facing women today and look at how women's employment is shaped by family and domestic responsibilities. .They offer an analysis of how global changes including new migration processes, educational expansion, transnational labour markets, technological advances and the global economy affect women's labour market experiences. They tackle issues relevant for future change, including gender inequalities and ethnic diversities, and confront contentious questions such as what is meant by work-life balance. The book provides new empirical research that both advances our understanding of the challenges posed by women's employment in our changing society and draws out the policy lessons that could improve economic and social wellbeing.

- Description
- This new edition of Women's Realities, Women's Choices introduces readers to the field of women's studies by examining the contradictions between social and cultural 'givens' and the realities that women face in society. Written collectively by nine authors from as many fields and disciplines, the book acknowledges the gap between women's realities and their choices--and both analyzes that gap and looks at ways to bridge it. Boxes and pictures contain new information. The book also highlights the impact of the post-Soviet world and economic globalization on women's lives, as well as the feminist issues of the 1990s and early twenty-first century. Chapter references have been updated to include not only films but also web sites.

- This collection explores family relations in two types of 'migrant families' in Europe: mixed families and transnational families. Based on qualitative fieldwork and surveys, the contributors analyse gender and intergenerational relations from a variety of standpoints and migratory flows. In their examination of family life in a migratory context, the authors develop theoretical approaches from the social sciences that go beyond migration studies, such as intersectionality, the solidarity paradigm, care circulation, reflexive modernization and gender convergence theory.

- Description
- This anthology brings together key writings to provide a comprehensive feminist analysis of the nature and practice of science. The contributors uncover the gender, class and racial prejudices of modern science. The book draws from a range of media, including feminist criticism, scientific literature, writings about scientific education, and the popular press. Articles are grouped into six themes: women in science - women's access to study and employment in science, combining both analytical evidence and personal testimonies: creating andocentric science - exploring the gendered origins of science at the time of the enlightenment: analysing gendered science - feminist methodologies and epistemology for the study of science: gendered praxis - examples of how gender bias can affect and distort scientific work: science and identity - how science reinforces gender and racial stereotypes: and feminist re-structuring of science - what is the future of feminist science studies? The reader also includes a comprehensive bibliography of feminist science studies.
